November is Great American Smokeout Month. In 1977, California sponsored a Smokeout Day where over a million people quit smoking for one day. That led to thousands of people quitting for good. The American Cancer Society then set aside the third Thursday in November as National Smokeout Day. This year, it’s November 17.
So quit like a champion! Get ready to lose the habit and become victorious over tobacco. More than 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and tobacco use still remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S. By quitting – even for one day – you’ll be taking an important step toward a healthier life – it’s a race for your health and it starts on November 17. That’s the day that quitters win!
Looking forward to that date, make a plan to quit. We know that smokers who have support are more likely to quit for good. So enlist the help of your family and friends. Tell them what you’re going to do. Then make a list of reasons why you want to quit smoking. Everyone has different reasons. Some hate the smell. Others hate the fact that tobacco seems to be controlling their time. Others hate the cost. Others have developed lung problems and no longer have the stamina to walk very far or to walk upstairs. Others are simply embarrassed because smoking is no longer socially acceptable and they have to go outside their place of work to smoke. Do some research on the quickest and most successful ways to quit.
Hypnosis is very effective and has been used by thousands of people over the years. If you want to quit smoking, your subconscious mind will cooperate and make it easy for you. If you don’t want to quit, don’t even make the call. And don’t let anyone bully you into quitting. YOU have to want to quit. If you try quitting because your spouse, kids or mom is ragging you about it, don’t bother. You may quit for a few days, then some stressful event will take place and you’ll start again. After that, you’ll try to save face by saying that hypnosis doesn’t work. That’s not true.
The cost of smoking is enormous – not only monetarily, but the health that is lost, the medical bills accrued and the second stream smoke that’s produced. Research shows that second stream smoke is as dangerous as first stream, so when you smoke in a closed place you endanger everyone around you. Governments and institutions have become aware of this, and since 1977 individual states or the federal government have limited smoking in working environments, in restaurants and on airlines.
More than 24 states have sued the tobacco companies, trying to recover the millions of dollars spent on smoking-related illnesses through Medicaid. The Department of Justice has also sued the tobacco companies, charging the industry with defrauding the public by lying about the risks of smoking. There are more than 4,000 toxins in every cigarette. There’s formaldehyde (used for embalming), as well as rocket fuel, to help the cigarette burn hotter and deliver a more potent dose of nicotine to the lungs. Arsenic and almost 4,000 other additives is what you buy when you shell out your hard-earned money for cigarettes. The marketing plan for tobacco products has been one of the most corrupt plans ever devised by corporations. Highly processed tobacco has put millions of people in an early grave. The statistics are there for anyone to see. Ignorance of the dangers of cigarettes cannot be an excuse anymore.
So why do people smoke? Most started because their friends were smoking and it seemed “cool.” Later they used cigarettes for comfort, as their lives became more complicated. Any stop-smoking program (including hypnosis) should incorporate an easy, quick stress-reduction technique that you can use anywhere at any time. If you have a way to release stress you won’t need to depend on cigarettes or any other tobacco product for anything.
Make the decision now to take better care of your body. You’re the only one who can. And your body is the only physical structure through which you can interpret the environment and live life on this planet, and it’s been diligently carrying your spirit around all these years. Show some appreciation. You have more than fifty trillion cells in your body; each one of those cells is working at quantum speed – each cell is processing at a hundred thousand times per second. You are a walking, thinking miracle, with mind, body and spirit working together for your greatest good. So take personal responsibility for your life and butt out now!
