Essential Oils: They Aren’t Just for Women

From Mental Clarity to Muscle Aches, Essential Oils Help Heal and Balance

In today’s stressful times, we often forget to take care of ourselves, and sometimes our loved ones. Right, guys? We get wrapped up in running here and there and we forget to take the time to “smell the roses,” or any other great aroma that can bring about relaxation and repair – or even uplift – our mood. So, here are some great tips to help each other achieve balance in our lives.

Mental Clarity

Let’s start with mental clarity, since clarity helps all the other issues we face each day. Some great oils to use include: grapefruit, lemon, lime, peppermint, rosemary, clove and spearmint. Combining some of these together with a carrier oil – such as almond or jojoba – and rubbing the oils in at the base of the skull will help to activate the brain. A great uplifting blend includes: pink grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, spearmint, peppermint, cinnamon, bergamot and ginger. Some others that will work well for this are jasmine, lavender, lemongrass, patchouli, pine and ylang-ylang.

Physical Endurance

Then, to get your physical endurance up and running, using grapefruit, peppermint, pine, rose, spearmint or thyme works wonders. Mixing these with your carrier oil and applying to the large muscles will help with blood flow and will provide a better workout. This combination can be used before an event to increase physical strength and endurance.

Muscle Soreness

Ah, but you over did it, and now have some sore muscles. For sore muscles, combine ylang-ylang, rosemary and eucalyptus mixed with your carrier oil, and rub this combination into those sore muscles. But, what if you got a sprain? Use ylang-ylang, lemongrass and pine or cypress. Tei Fu, an essential oil that is more like a medicine chest in a bottle, helps with numerous issues from sprains to strains to toothaches to headaches. Tei Fu contains eucalyptus, camphor, wintergreen, lavender, menthol and clove with safflower oil.


You made it through the day, and now it’s time to relax and have time with that special one. If communication has been a little lacking of late, open up those channels and encourage the flow of feelings that have been repressed. Frankincense, pine and ylang-ylang are a good combination, as are lemon, sandalwood and clary sage. You once again combine these with your carrier oil and rub this formula into the upper chest, back of the neck and shoulders… A great relaxing massage in this area can open up more than communication. So as your thoughts turn to romance, focus on each other and enjoy the evening with a massage using rose, patchouli, clary sage and ylang-ylang. You can also add some cedarwood and ginger to spice things up a bit. Massage the formula with your carrier oil into the back, neck and shoulders of your partner until the oil is fully absorbed in the skin. This treatment should be mutually reciprocated for best results.
