The pH Miracle

Balance Your Diet,
Reclaim Your Health
By Dr. Robert O. Young and Shelly Redford Young
A Book Review by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
This is not the first book about the benefits of a correct alkaline/acid balance in your body, and it won’t be the last. Dr. Young explains why the pH level (acid/alkaline balance) of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. It seems that the entire metabolic process depends upon an alkaline environment.
Chronic over-acidity corrodes body tissue, and if left unchecked will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. Dr. Young believes that over-acidity is at the root of all disease, and he also believes that’s what is keeping us fat.
In order to create the proper acid/alkaline balance within your body you must eat the proper balance of acid and alkaline foods. That means 80 percent of your diet must be alkalizing foods, like green vegetables. We need much smaller portions of acid foods like meats and grains on our plates. So if you have three-quarters of your plate filled with green vegetables, you’ll be good to go.
The book explains the details of why this is true, exactly what to eat and gives suggestions on how to prepare it. Dr. Young explains how this program will bring you increased quality of life. Over the years he has seen this alkalizing program bring immediate improvement to many who are seriously ill, especially those who are completely confused about what is causing their illness. Dr. Young says that it is only when the body is acidic is it vulnerable to germs – in a healthy base (slightly alkaline) balance, germs can’t get a foothold.
Dr. Young has seen the following changes in his patients after beginning an alkalizing diet: an increase in energy, new mental clarity and powers of concentration, increased strength and stamina, release of excess body fat while increasing muscle mass, brighter eyes and clearer skin, and basically a return to vibrant, personal health.
He believes that “all the body’s regulatory mechanisms (including breathing, circulation, digestion and hormone production) work to balance the delicate internal acid/alkaline balance. Our bodies cannot tolerate extended over-acidity. In the early stages of the imbalance, the symptoms may not be very intense, and may include only such things as skin eruptions, headaches, allergies, colds and flu, and sinus problems. As things get further out of whack, more serious situations arise. Weakened organs and systems start to give way, resulting in dysfunctional thyroid glands, adrenals, liver and so on. If the pH in tissue deviates too far to the acid side, oxygen levels decrease and cellular metabolism will slow. In other words, cells begin to die at an increased rate.”
Dozens of personal stories are given explaining how people who had spent years trying to determine why they were sick and what to do about it, tried Dr. Young’s program and regained their health. These ailments included chronic indigestion, allergies, different types of cancer, fatigue, dizziness, anemia, hypoglycemia, eating disorders, eye problems and everything in between.
In addition, Dr. Young believes that most people don’t drink nearly enough water. He states that what most people interpret as hunger is really the body’s cry for water, and that you should drink at least 4 liters of pure water each day. He reminds us that we can’t count sodas, coffee or other liquids as pure water. His research also shows that you may need a vegetable juice cleanse in order to really get started on a balanced pH program.
He has included dozens of recipes for high alkaline meals in the book, so as you understand the concept, as you read the lists of acid and alkaline foods, it all seems to come together and make sense. Only you can decide to do a gradual balance or an abrupt balance. Dr. Young feels that if you are seriously ill, you need to get your body back into pH balance as soon as possible. His experience with thousands of patients shows that this is vital.
The author quotes Robert Louis Stevenson when he says, “There will come a time when we will sit down to the banquet of our consequences.”  Dr. Young believes that the American public is currently suffering the consequences of an over-acidic diet, and has written this book in order to explain what to do about it.
