THE HEALTHY ADVENTURER

Hans-on-bike_BW

I began my healthy adventures in 1990. By combining bicycling, kayaking and hiking, I would eventually travel four times around the earth. I am 70 years old and have not been sick since 1972. It is never too late to live a healthy, active, adventuresome life as you will read in a series of articles. Kayaking through Siberia, Part 9 Would the remaining camera, CD player, short wave radio, cell phone, flashlights, etc. be ruined? How about my documents and paperwork? Soiled? If I had only … [Read more...]

Nordic Walking at the Sparks Marina

rick_deutsch_300

August 13th was a typical 90 degree day in town, but not hot enough to keep our class from meeting at the Marina for the one hour Nordic Walking introduction class given by Rick Deutsch, an American Nordic Walking Association certified instructor. This fitness activity is the rage in Europe and was profiled in the July Healthy Beginnings issue (Pg 36). Following a short intro explaining the history and benefits of Nordic Walking (how’s 20 to 40 percent more calories burned than just walking … [Read more...]

Nordic Walking the NEW Fitness Routine

NordicWalking_rgb

Written By HB Staff | Leave it to the Europeans to lead the way on fitness ideas. For example, in the 1980’s no one used trekking poles to help them get up the slopes of hills. The core, or rectus abdominals, improves your posture and prevents injuries (it will save your back damn it). It also helps develop functional strength (Yes, that mighty strength I religiously speak about and what your fat bodybuilder buddies probably lack). This summer, you will have … [Read more...]

THE HEALTHY ADVENTURER

Kayaking through Siberia, Part 6 Upstream from Krasnoyarsk, the river snakes through mountainous terrain. Vladimir had taken me there the day before, as far as the Lenin Dam and power plant. Now, the landscape flattened out. Here and there I passed laid-back villages. Occasionally, I saw folks fishing from the shores. Towards evening, I pitched my tent across the river of one of the settlements--my first night in this enchanting world. I had just taken off the next morning when it began to … [Read more...]

Stand Up Paddling

Paddle2

Written By Mike Tessier | Photo: PeterSpain.com   Stand Up Paddling is new to some, but it’s actually an ancient way of travel. Centuries ago, native Hawaiians, Indians and Europeans used this form of paddling to cross various types of water ways. The boards were carved out of wood, weighing in at about 80 pounds. Some findings show that Native Americans built boards out of Tully weeds that were tied to each other, to form a stand up paddle board/boat. They used a long pole, with … [Read more...]
