Do you love to walk, hike and socialize? Then the Nordic Walking Group is for you! Walking with poles is a European fitness rage that has finally arrived in the USA. With roots in cross country skiing, Nordic Walking uses lightweight poles to engage your upper body while walking normally. By using the poles correctly when walking, you can increase your caloric burn by an average of 20 percent (up to 46 percent) over “just” walking. Your heart rate increases, and oxygen intake goes up as well. All of this benefit with no joint pain and no extra effort!
If you are an avid walker or hiker, or just beginning a walking hobby, you are invited to attend an introductory session sponsored by Healthy Beginnings. Rick Deutsch is a certified American Nordic Walking Association Instructor. He visited from San Jose last summer to teach many of our readers. He is an avid outdoorsman and has written the only guidebook to hiking Yosemite’s Half Dome, having hiked it 31 times. He is also an active scuba diver, bicyclist and runner. Rick uses trekking poles religiously on his hikes at Yosemite, and introduced a Nordic Walking program onboard Crystal Cruises in 2009. He teaches Nordic Walking at Colleges, parks and companies. His enthusiastic and humorous style makes learning this activity fun and engaging.
The class is 90 min and will begin at 10 am on Friday, August 10th. The group will meet at Sparks Marina. The fee is $25 and is limited to 10 people. LEKI Nordic Walking poles will be provided. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection.
