Health In The New Year

Health in the New Year -A New You…well, that was the plan.
Written by Rio Simone, CPT, MFA
As New Year’s Resolutions come and go…the road to NOWHERE is paved with good intentions. Keep these basics in mind to ensure success on your path to better health.
Planning – Without a good map, how do you find your way? GPS doesn’t apply. Seek expert advice if you don’t know the road. Have a compelling reason:  “I want to reduce my risks for diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and other health problems so I can enjoy my life.” Set realistic goals for lifestyle changes – Fad diets are fads – they don’t last and are NOT safe; you gain back more weight than when you started. You must have a plan beyond the first month.
Nutrition – Dieting can lead to eating disorders and diet pills have side effects. This is not solid nutrition; your metabolism gets distorted. Skipping meals is sabotage; worse than eating too much! Depriving your body of essential nutrients causes your body to go into starvation mode – it wants to hang onto everything you put into it. Don’t know the fundamentals of nutrition? Get books on the subject, take a class, or seek out a certified health professional, trained and experienced in health and nutrition.
Fitness – You have to move! Variety is the spice of life; choose something suited to your level. Proper technique and form avoids injury. REST days are a MUST. Overtraining leads to weakened immunity and greater risk for injury—mind and body.
This year, make a resolution, and plan, for life!
