ENERGY Therapy

ENERGY THERAPY
The Body Electric
By Patricia Pollman, RN, HN-BC, HTPA
The wide array of energy therapy methods to choose from today can be confusing and overwhelming. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM, part of the NIH) has identified five domains of complementary/alternative medicine (CAM), one of which is energy therapies: “healing that involves the use of energy fields.”  Two specific types are identified: (a) bio-field therapies, which are “intended to affect energy fields that purportedly surround and penetrate the human body,” and (b) bio-electromagnetic-based therapies, which “involve the unconventional” use of electro-magnetic fields, such as pulsed fields, magnetic fields or alternating-current or direct current fields.
Healing Touch is a relaxing, nurturing energy therapy, which involves individuals in their own healing process. Using gentle touch on or above the body, Healing Touch assists in balancing your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being, as it enhances the body’s relaxation response. The therapy works with your energy field to support the body’s innate, natural capacity to heal.
It is safe for all age groups and works in harmony with standard medical care and other complementary modalities. Healing Touch may be used in a wide variety of settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, private practices, hospices, and spas.
Your choice of practitioner is more important than your choice of a particular energy modality. The caring ethic of the practitioner is of even greater importance, due to the interaction between your energy fields. This interaction allows a therapeutic alliance to develop to a depth that may otherwise take many months in a more cognitive-oriented approach, evoking healing in the recipient.
Janet Mentgen RN, founded Healing Touch in 1989, as a certified program of study through Healing Touch International, which is endorsed by the American Holistic Nurse’s Association. The Healing Touch Curriculum is a 120-hour continuing education program consisting of 5 levels, moving from beginning to advanced practitioner. After completing four levels, students undertake a minimum one-year mentorship with a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner (CHTP). Upon completion, students are then eligible to apply for certification.
