From dairy products to fresh fruits and vegetables, we all know that we should eat a well-balanced variety of foods in order to get the vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to function properly. Scientific evidence suggests B vitamins are some of the most important vitamins we should always make sure to include in our diets. Vitamins are complicated molecules that we need in very minute quantities to stay healthy, and to prevent a wide range of diseases. Each vitamin has an irreplaceable role in the body’s metabolism and they are essential to our health.

There are eight B vitamins. They generally function as coenzymes in biochemical transformations for important bodily functions. Over the years, governmental regulations have been put into place in the United States, making it mandatory for many foods like whole grain products to be fortified with B vitamins. However, intakes above the Reference Daily Intake (RDI) may be particularly important in people with defects in the absorption of these vitamins, especially in aging adults. So, if you’re not already taking a vitamin B complex, you may want to consider it!

The B vitamins are: thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), and cobalamin (B12).

Thiamine (B1) and riboflavin (B2) function as coenzymes in the metabolism of carbohydrates and certain amino acids to help the body produce energy.

Common foods in the U.S. containing thiamine include bread products, grains, and ready-to-eat cereals that have been enriched or fortified with the vitamin. Most plant and animal tissues contain traces of riboflavin. Dairy products, especially milk, are the richest food source of riboflavin.

Niacin (B3) refers to nicotinamide and nicotinic acid. It functions in energy production at a cellular level and helps keep the skin, nervous system, and digestive system healthy. High doses of niacin have been shown to lower cholesterol.

Mammals cannot synthesize most vitamins. Niacin is different in that our bodies make it from tryptophan, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods like meat, fish and poultry. Foods including beans and liver also contain niacin in the free form.

Pantothenic acid (B5) is needed for the synthesis of coenzyme A, a cofactor for many processes that influence growth and development. It is essential to almost all forms of life and it is found in virtually all plant and animal cells. Foods like chicken, beef, potatoes, oat cereals, tomato products, liver, kidney, yeast, egg yolk, broccoli, and whole grains are all major sources of pantothenic acid. Dietary deficiencies of the vitamin are very rare since it is widely distributed in the foods we eat.

Pyridoxine (B6) functions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of amino acids that help the body break down protein. It also helps maintain the health of red blood cells, the nervous system, and parts of the immune system.

As with vitamin B5, pyridoxine deficiencies are rare since the vitamin is widely distributed in vegetables, cereal, and animal foods.

Biotin (B7) helps break down protein and carbohydrates. It is a coenzyme in reactions involving the production of hormones.

Milk, liver, eggs, and a few vegetables are the most important natural sources of biotin in human nutrition. Less common foods that are rich sources of the vitamin include brewer’s yeast and royal jelly, which comes from the glands of honeybees.

Folate (B9) helps cells in the body synthesize DNA. It is important in the production of red blood cells and is required for normal cell division. Folic acid is the most stable form of folate; it is the form used in vitamin supplements and fortified foods in the U.S.

There is evidence that folate may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, and psychiatric and mental disorders. Folate supplementation is also particularly important in pregnancy as it significantly reduces the chances of negative pregnancy outcomes such as neural tube defects.

The greatest contribution of folate in the U.S. diet comes from fortified cereals and vegetables like green beans, green peas, lettuce, and cabbage. Organ meats such as liver are especially rich in folate.

Cobalmin (B12) is an important part of the body’s growth and development. It is a coenzyme in the production of blood cells, nervous system function, and the expenditure of carbohydrates.

Vegetarians and vegans have a high risk of B12 deficiency because unlike other B vitamins, B12 is not a normal constituent of plant foods. Vitamin B12 is found mainly in animal foods including shellfish, organ meats, and a few kinds of fish. These foods are not a part of the average diet and it has become a routine medical practice to check for B12 deficiencies in patients who exhibit common symptoms of anemia.

Like most vitamins, many of the B vitamins have metabolic interrelationships in which they work together to produce essential cofactors that assist in biochemical transformations. They are dependent on one another in order to work properly. For example, both folate and vitamin B12 are required for the formation of 5,10-methylene tetrahydrofolate, an essential cofactor in normal DNA synthesis. Inadequate folate or B12 intake causes anemia, a disorder in which there are too few red blood cells.

Elevated DNA damage and altered gene expression are also important risk factors of cancer. Therefore, many doctors and health professionals recommend adults take a daily vitamin B complex to reduce the risk of cancer.

Several studies found that supplementation with a vitamin B complex led to decreased anxiety, improved well-being, energy, and decreased stress in both men and women. These benefits are another important aspect of good personal health.

Given the scientific evidence behind the many possible health benefits of B vitamin supplementation, it seems more important than ever to make sure we are getting an adequate supply of these vitamins. So, consider the information that’s out there and if you want to start taking simple steps to maintain good health, just remember to take your vitamins!

Written By KEVIN VANIA |

Bruises and sprains can be very bothersome. They’re painful and often hinder our ability to make it through the day without a struggle, or at least forcing us to think about a nagging injury every time we move a certain way. On top of the pain and discomfort, bruises tend to have an undesirable effect on our appearances. The dark blue and purple shades that linger on our skin as indicators of tissue damage aren’t something we typically enjoy.

Sure you can relieve pain and swelling with conventional medicines that often do as much bad as they do good, and you can cover blemishes with makeup, but what about actually fixing the problem using natural solutions that aren’t going to harm your body? Looking for a homoeopathic treatment? Look no further, arnica (arnica montana) is your natural remedy.

Arnica, commonly referred to as leopard’s bane, is a beautiful yellow daisy found in meadows and mountainous regions of Europe and North America. The herb grows in acidic soils, and its perceived medicinal properties are due to high levels of alkaloid trimethylamine and helenalin, a sesquiterpene lactone that is a major ingredient found in anti-inflammatory products. It has been used by Europeans and Native Americans since before the end of the sixteenth century to reduce the pain and inflammation of sprains, aches and bruises. European arnica is obtained from Arnica montana and Arnica chamissonis, while American arnica is obtained from Arnica cordifolia, Arnica fulgens, and Arnica sororia.

Formerly part of the U.S. pharmacopeia from the 1800s to 1960, arnica is the most common homoeopathic medicine used for aches, sprains, bruises, abrasions, postsurgical bruising, and similar surface wounds. Studies have shown strongly positive results when used for contusions and hematomas of any part of the body. It should generally be the first medicine given for any ankle or wrist sprain.

Arnica is most recommended to be used externally as a topical cream for local application. Never apply arnica to an open wound. While it is considered safe for external use, it is poisonous when taken internally, frequently causing death. Arnica should not be taken by mouth without the direct medical supervision of a doctor unless you are using homoeopathic tinctures, capsules, pellets, tablets, or other diluted preparations of the herb that are safe for oral consumption.

Arnica tinctures are prepared using a dosage of liquid extract from the fresh or dried flower heads, diluted up to 10 times with water. A tincture of the herb can be used in compresses for bruises, or even swelling related to toothaches.

Uses:

After a serious fall, spread arnica cream on the injured area a few times a day to relieve pain. It can even stop a bruise from forming when used immediately after hurting oneself. Apply arnica to existing bruises to reduce the appearance, and tenderness.

Arnica has anti-inflammatory properties. It may not “cure” sore muscles, but applying it after a long run or a day of heavy lifting can reduce the duration and intensity of soreness.

Sleeping on the road or in situations away from home, like camping, you may be forced to sleep on hard, uncomfortable surfaces. If your bed is too firm or hard, you may wake up with a sore back and painful muscles that feel as if they have been bruised. Take arnica up to three times a day to relieve aches and pains.

Toothache; tear off a small piece of a cotton ball and apply several drops of arnica tincture to the cotton and place the cotton next to the swollen gum to provide relief.

In small doses, arnica is a cardiac stimulant. It is also given for angina, a symptom of underlying heart problems in which your heart muscle is deprived of oxygen-rich blood.

It is also used in pregnancy. Arnica is given routinely at the end of labor when a woman is sore.

Arnica is a fairly common remedy for sore muscles in circles like the running community. It is gaining popularity in the treatment of postsurgical bruising, and many people find it really works! But remember, what works for some people may not work for others. Some people are more susceptible than others to certain substances. “Each reacts according to his ability,” according to author Michel Aubin. There are no model prescriptions with homoeopathy; rather it involves applying a method based on logical reasoning. The information for all types of homoeopathic remedies is out there, so educate yourself and medicate the safe and natural way.

*Arnica belongs to the Asteraceae family. Anyone allergic to ragweed or other plants in the family should avoid arnica-containing products.

I have been so convinced of the importance of vitamin E that I’ve been taking it for over 30 years. Vitamin E is an indispensable member of the body’s antioxidant system.

But that’s not all. Vitamin E has other functions, some completely unrelated to its role as an antioxidant. In addition to its powerful antioxidant properties, vitamin E:

Promotes heart health.

Promotes respiratory health.

Helps with normal PMS symptoms.

Supports circulation.

Supports prostate and breast health.

Is good for your brain.

May help hot flashes in menopausal women.

Discovered in 1922, it is only in the last decade that the public began to be educated about the critical fact that vitamin E is not a single compound, but rather a general name for a whole family of compounds.

Research is beginning to focus on specific tocopherols, rather than on just “vitamin E.” Look for a blend of natural source tocopherols providing the antioxidant benefits of vitamin E. Vitamin E should contain d-alpha tocopherol, with the benefits of beta, delta, and substantial gamma tocopherols.

Getting to know all the compounds in the vitamin E family of tocopherols is necessary to choose the right vitamin E product and get the full benefits of this superior antioxidant and nutrient.

Important Facts You Should Know About Vitamin E

Vitamin E is essential to life–we cannot live without it.

How much vitamin E is enough? Prominent researchers believe that to perform at its best, the body needs more than the US Daily Value (DV) of 30 IU vitamin E daily and the average American diet supplies considerably less than this amount. According to renowned international researcher Dr. Evan Shute, a physician recognized for his over 30 years of work with vitamin E, average healthy females should have 400 IU a day, and average healthy males 600 IU a day.

Vitamin E should be taken at mealtime–it is absorbed better when taken with meals rather than an on an empty stomach.

Inorganic Iron can DESTROY vitamin E. According to the Shute Institute, the two should be separated in the stomach by an 8-9 hour interval. However, organic iron, found in spinach, and other iron rich foods can be taken at the same time as vitamin E.

For centuries, mothers in India believed that rice bran held certain healing powers that worked miracles on their ill children.

When a child or relative was sick, a mother would often rush to the local mill and collect freshly-milled rice bran from the discard pile. She would then immediately prepare a broth or gruel from the bran and feed it to the sick child, who would often recover.

The nutritional superiority of rice bran has long been known by the medical community. However, within hours after milling, oxidative changes render the rice bran unfit for human consumption. An enzyme called lipase combines with the oil in the rice bran, turning the oil rancid. The result is that nutrients are lost, and the oil undergoes chemical changes that become toxic. Sadly, 40 million metric ton of rice bran is discarded annually worldwide; it is due to rapid development of rancidity.

Scientists and others have made repeated attempts over the past 50 years to deactivate the lipase, and thus stabilize the rice bran, but until very recently, a non-chemical working process eluded them. A proprietary extrusion process was developed to protect against rancidity, and to maintain and enhance rice bran’s nutritional value.

This non-chemical process deactivates the lipase and the result is stabilized rice bran, the most nutrient-dense, whole food source on the planet. ZEAL Stabilized Rice Bran (Z-Rice) is water-soluble, predigested, and easily available to the body. It contains over 120 antioxidants. In short, it is cell ready food! Super health is the result of two things: feeding the cells with bio-available nutrient-dense food sources and protecting the cells from free radicals.

Due to a large array of naturally occurring antioxidants, Z-Rice may help fight premature aging, heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and certain eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

No other whole food, supplement, or combination of supplements can compare. Z-Rice is just one of 42 Primary Nutrients found within ZEAL!

There are many modalities available for the safe, non-toxic care of children. I will concentrate on vitamin A in this issue, and in ensuing articles cover other therapies such as other vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, volatile oils, homeopathic remedies, isopathic remedies, oxidative therapies, herbal remedies, hormonal support, allergy treatment, dietary adjustments, amino acid therapies, antibiotics and anti-fungal therapies.

Vitamin A is generally regarded as the anti-infection vitamin and mucous membrane protector. It prevents squamous metaplasia, changing of the body linings from tall, ciliated cells (contain little hairs on them which move out mucous and infection) to cells that are like the ones on the skin, which do not protect the lungs, intestines, sinuses, oropharnyx and ears from infection. Vitamin A is vital to support the adrenal glands (stress glands) and is specific for otitis media (ear infections), acne, growth impairment, hyperkatosis (rough skin), night blindness and xerophthalmia–the leading cause of blindness in the world, especially in the third world, when the eyes dry out from lack of vitamin A and then ulcerate and become infected resulting in blindness.
Beta carotene is a double vitamin A molecule, and is much less useful than vitamin A. This is the substance in carrot juice that turns the palms and body orange; it scares doctors into thinking the child is being poisoned from vitamin A.

Since vitamin A is one of the fat soluble vitamins, it can be retained in the body, causing toxicity. The toxicity manifests as a tight, band-like headache, nose bleeds and chapped lips. In very chronic situations, it causes an over-production of tissue on the outside of the bones (periostium). There are no long term side effects from acute vitamin A overdose; they all go away with discontinuation of the vitamin. Vitamin A is bound to a liver protein, a retinol binding protein, which is produced in higher amounts when people take larger doses of vitamin A. When vitamin A is bound, it is non-toxic; when it is free and unbound, it is toxic. People with skin diseases have taken up to one million units per day without side effects, but the dose must be increased slowly.

Cod liver oil (CLO) is a good first supplement for babies, starting around three months of age. The fat soluble vitamins do not cross the placenta in pregnancy and need to be replaced in infants. Not only does CLO have vitamins A and D, but also EPA (eicosapentenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexenoic acid), which are fatty acids that protect the brain, improve intelligence and prevent cancer. The dosage for children should be 1,000 units per year of age. One tablespoon of CLO contains about 4,500 units of vitamin A, so a three month old could take about 1/8th tsp. Also, give vitamin A intermittently, five days per week, so it doesn’t build up to toxic levels. Vitamin A emulsion (drops of vitamin A) is made from lemon grass and is neutral tasting oil if CLO is resisted by the child. Actually, little children tend to really like CLO and love to crunch the pearls in it.

Supplementation with CLO and vitamin A can prevent ear infections and reduce the illness and death due to measles. Overutilization of typanostomy tubes (ear drainage tubes for infection) was addressed in a 1994 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. “About one quarter of tympanostomy tube insertion in this study were proposed for inappropriate indications and another third for equivocal ones.” The authors suggest that several hundred thousand children may be receiving tubes that offer no advantage over other therapies. Rats on a vitamin A free diet showed extensive focal metaplasia. Keratization of normally columnar, ciliated epithelium occurred in over half of subjects. Acute otitis media with effusion was found. Vitamin A deficiency disrupts the clearing mechanism of the ear. A study from the ENT department of the University Of Texas School Of Medicine studied Micronesian children that were vitamin A deficient and developed otitis media. They also found that vitamin A deficient Guinea pigs showed otitis media and Eustachian tube dysfunction as the primary mechanism. The Wisconsin Division of Health studied the severity of Measles and showed that Vitamin A reduces mortality in African children with acute measles. In the U.S., children hospitalized with measles retinol (vitamin A) concentrations were depressed, and the degree of depression was associated with the degree if illness severity. Actually, many other studies show that mortality (death) from measles approaches zero with vitamin A supplementation.

An estimated 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, according to the American Pain Foundation. That’s a lot of pain; and that adds up to a lot of drug use, notably the category called NSAID’s, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen are over-the-counter examples of this class of drug. These drugs inhibit COX1 and COX2 enzymes, major factors in pain. But they cause stomach damage–even bleeding ulcers–and are implicated in over 16,000 deaths from side effects per year. Then, there are prescription drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex, designed to inhibit activity of only the COX2 enzyme. They do accomplish this, but along the way, they can also cause liver and kidney damage–and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. That’s a bad deal. Medicines should heal, not hurt. They should promote life, not take it away. In part, due to disappointment with drugs, and in part due to a belief that natural remedies are safer than most pharmaceuticals, many people seek natural remedies to alleviate pain. But where do they look?

Enter curcumin, a derivative of turmeric root. Traditionally, turmeric, or Curcuma longa, was widely used for food, cosmetic and medicinal purposes. Turmeric provides the distinctive yellow color to curry, and is used to color butter, cheese and other foods. In India’s traditional system of Ayurveda, turmeric enjoys a long history of use for the treatment of respiratory conditions, which include asthma and allergies, coughs, sinusitis; it is also used for liver disorders, rheumatism and to treat diabetic wounds.

Compounds in turmeric most responsible for its broad uses are the curcuminoids, notably curcumin. Curcumin demonstrates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, anticarcinogenic and antimicrobial activity, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective and antiarthritic benefits. Curcumin accounts for approximately three percent of the dry weight of turmeric root. Whole turmeric root and concentrated curcumin demonstrate great safety. In fact, no studies in animals or humans have discovered any toxicity associated with the use of either, even at very high doses. Turmeric is consumed in very large quantities daily in various parts of Asia and Southeast Asia, imparting only benefits. In other words, curcumin is utterly safe.

As if all the other science on curcumin were insufficient, recent studies also suggest that curcumin may offer significant cognitive-enhancing and antidepressant benefits. These benefits appear primarily due to curcumin’s capacity to promote the activity of neuroprotective factors in the brain, and to regulate certain neurotransmitters. This research suggests even broader uses for curcumin than previously considered, and creates opportunity for inclusion of curcumin in brain-protective and mood-enhancing formulas.

With regard to pain, turmeric root and curcumin specifically show superstar status. In addition to curcumin, turmeric root also contains other anti-inflammatory compounds including cineol, alpha-pinene, borneol, caffeic acid, caryophyllene, eugenol, limonene, and vanillic acid. In any good turmeric-derived pain product, these agents would also support the activity of curcumin. Like the NSAID’s, curcumin inhibits COX2. But unlike the NSAID’s, it does not do so selectively. Instead, curcumin also balances the activity of other key factors in inflammation, including NF-kappaB, PPAR Gamma transcription factors, and 5-LOX. By inhibiting the activity of all these aspects of inflammation, curcumin delivers far superior anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving activity than most drugs.

The role of inflammation in pain is pretty straightforward. Any of a variety of insults can cause inflammation in the tissues of our bodies. External insults like burns, bites, scrapes, stings, cuts and bruises cause skin tissue to swell as protective fluids pour into damaged tissue between cells. Nerves may also be directly hurt. All of this activity is accompanied by pain. This is also the case with internal injuries that may be diet-related or the result of wear and tear.

With its superior anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin can help with pain relief. But curcumin is rather poorly absorbed. In cultures where turmeric root is used by the kilo in the evening’s curry, people consume very large amounts of curcumin. Thus, they absorb a good amount of curcumin, bound to various dietary fats and oils also present in foods. Curcumin is soluble and better absorbed when conveyed in fat; and a number of Ayurvedic medicinal recipes call for the use of turmeric root cooked in fatty buffalo milk. When turmeric root is cooked in a curry along with vegetable oil, curcumin mixes with the oil and enhances absorption.

By helping with pain relief, and doing so naturally and safely; you can lift the veil of darkness that chronic pain engenders, which transforms peoples’ understanding of the benefits of natural remedies through positive experience. Natural, plant-based remedies are still the most widely employed health supporters on earth, far more than over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

Mimicking Serotonin

In the world of life sciences, serotonin is one of the biggest celebrities. Tens of thousands of prescriptions are being written every day for pills that fool your body into thinking it has more serotonin than it does. There is little doubt about it, serotonin has become a goldmine for the pharmaceutical industry.

We need serotonin, it’s true. All the surveys and all the psychometric testing could not make it more clear: our country needs to calm down and get some sleep…and stop eating so much carbohydrate. But there are two vastly different approaches to making your body think it has more serotonin. One is to mimic it. The other is to make it.

What is puzzling is that with all the articles being written about serotonin, you might think the public would be more familiar with L-tryptophan. There’s really no better, no more-natural way to make serotonin.

About Lidtke L-Tryptophan

It is well-known that European pharmaceutical standards for L-Tryptophan are far higher than U.S. or Japanese standards. The Europeans take safety seriously, as we do at Lidtke. The European standard not only demands testing for known toxins that are ignored in the U.S. and Japan, but European standards have much lower limits on contaminants, overall. Although many products claim to meet pharmaceutical standards, clearly not all pharmaceutical standards are the same – not even close.

From our beginning sixteen years ago, it has been our crusade to meet the highest standards in the world. We question everything, and we look beneath the surface. The world changes, and it takes work to keep up. That is our job: to stand between you, our customer, and the nearly incomprehensible chaos of the nutrition world, and to look out for your interests, your health and your safety.

L-Tryptophan:

● Promotes restful sleep

● Reduces anxiety

● Soothes nervous irritability

● Relieves muscle pain

● Supports a cheerful mood

● Reduces the craving for fattening carbs

Vitamin C, well known for boosting the immune system and preventing colds, is now getting the attention of discerning health consumers because of its benefits for brain health. This is drawing people to find premier food sources of vitamin C so that we can age gracefully, elevate our mood and improve concentration for better job performance.

Vitamin C protects your nervous system. The nervous system includes your brain, eyes and all the nerves running throughout your body that tell your heart when to contract, your lungs when to breathe, and your muscles when to flex–it’s the electronic system of your body.

If you do not have a fully functional nervous system, you may experience symptoms like depression. You may lose the ability to focus sharply. You may experience a foggy brain, learn slowly, feel sluggish or forget things easily. Eventually a person with a compromised nervous system may end up with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is associated with the buildup of plaque on brain nerves and recent research shows that this plaque is reversible through vitamin C nutrition and brain exercise. Yes, using your brain and playing concentration or number games like Sudoku can help you age well, and when accompanied with good nutritional support, high in vitamin C, you gain even more clarity and long term mindfulness.

Mike Adams, founder of www.naturalnews.com, states that “If you’re interested in anti-aging, or if you’re getting up in years and you want to make sure you have optimal brain performance for the rest of your life, the Camu berry is one of the most important nutritional supplements you can consume. Think of it as an insurance policy against neurodegenerative diseases.”

There’s not food on the planet with a higher concentration of vitamin C than the Camu berry. Oranges are generally known for their high vitamin C content. However, oranges often only have around 1,000 ppm of vitamin C. Sometimes they can have as high as 3,000 or 4,000 but that’s unusual, especially given the way they are commercially grown today. The Camu berry can have concentrations as high as 50,000 ppm, or about 2 g of vitamin C per 100 g of fruit. That means that the Camu berry provides 50 times more vitamin C than an orange (on an ounce-for-ounce basis.)*

A major cause of depression is a suppressed or poorly functioning nervous system and Dr. Gary Null ranks the Amazonian fruit known as Camu as the number two source for anti-depressant properties because of its rich array of chemical compounds that protect and nourish the nervous system.

According to Dr. James Duke, botanist and herbal authority, the Camu berry provides nutritional support for the brain to optimize its own mood-balancing chemistry. Camu is one of his favorite Rainforest botanicals.

The Camu-Camu berry, also known as the “feel good fruit” is available in various sources from power to juice and concentrates. When purchasing, check your source and make sure there are no additives or fillers.

More Research and Facts on Vitamin C and a Healthy Brain:

• A high vitamin C intake may protect against both cognitive impairment and cerebrovascular disease.

• Long-term, current users of vitamin E with vitamin C had significantly better mean performance, as judged by a global score that combined individual test scores, than did women who had never used vitamin E or C.

• These results suggest that vitamin E and C supplements may protect against vascular dementia and may improve cognitive function in late life.

The multiple health benefits to consuming Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) found in fish oil are becoming well known amongst health advocates and lay people alike. Fish oil supplements are becoming as popular as multivitamins to consumers looking to take care of their good health. The EFAs such as Omega 3, 5, 6 and 9, which occur naturally in fish such as wild salmon, serve to nourish brain, heart and kidney tissues. They have also benefit the immune and digestive systems, in addition to supporting a healthy metabolism and a positive mood.

There is, however, a difference in fish oils. Some vitamin manufacturers use whole fish oils, which come straight from the fish; generally from wild-caught fish. Other manufacturers use “purified” fish oils, which go through a purification process that involves the use of complex, high heat processes that tend to break down the valuable compounds. The oils become fractionated; isolated and important nutrients are lost. While some manufacturers will then attempt to add back specific nutrients into their product, the benefits of the whole have been lost forever.

The difference in fish oils is clear. The dull, yellow color and watery texture of conventional fish oil capsules is symbolic of “purified” products. The heavy distillation fractionates isolates and destroys the many valuable compounds that give fish oil its vibrant color and natural viscosity.

Whole fish oils should be extraordinary in color and transparency. The brilliant hue comes from the Astaxanthin, which is a powerful antioxidant found naturally and abundantly in wild salmon. Again, the chemical processing in “purified” fish oils can destroy this vital nutrient.

Let us not forget about one of the most important factors of producing high quality fish oil. Sustainability! Some vitamin manufacturers use 100% wild Alaskan salmon oil from fisheries recognized for ocean stewardship and sustainability. Alaska maintains one of the worlds most highly protected and managed natural fisheries and has outlawed salmon fish farming. By using only wild, sustainably caught Alaskan salmon–which happen to be among the cleanest and most pure fish stocks in the world–chemical processing to deliver a pure product is simply not necessary.

We’ve all heard that vitamin C supports overall health and the immune system but there is a lot more to know about this nutrient, its benefits and most ideal sources.

Did you know that your body can assimilate vitamins and minerals more efficiently when in whole food form? It makes sense! Our bodies were designed to eat the foods that nature provides. In an ideal world those foods are rich in minerals, vitamins, amino acids, anti-oxidants and life force. Imagine the density of nutrition found in wild foods grown in virgin soil, unadulterated by chemicals and over cultivation. Today’s diet contain a fraction of the nutrition that our grandparents received because of depleted soils, chemical agriculture, long storage and transit times and over processing. Therefore our bodies are craving for easy to absorb bio-available nourishment in a whole plant form.

Super foods fulfill our body’s longing. Camu-Camu is one such food gaining attention by scientist, doctors and discerning health consumers. Camu-Camu (myrcia dubia) often called bayberry fruit grows on a small tree that thrives in the lush, enriched soil of the Amazon Rainforest flood plains.

Because of Camu’s anti-viral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, qualities, its uses are numerous but diverse. Most of these benefits are linked to its high vitamin C content plus the high content of bioflavonoids. When used alone vitamin C is not effective, it must be accompanied by bioflavonoids. For example scurvy cannot be cured by synthetic vitamin C. Only natural sources of vitamin C, which also contain natural bioflavonoids, are effective.

Camu-Camu is a superior choice over synthetic vitamin C to support and strengthen the immune system, liver, lungs, lymphatic and urinary systems. Plant based vitamin C such as Camu-Camu has the additional advantages of being non-irratating to sensitive stomachs and because it is a complete source, one or two grams a day is as effective as five to six grams of synthetic vitamin C.

Camu, as a natural plant source of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) contains thirty times more vitamin C than an orange and also provided a significant amount of B vitamins, beta-carotene, minerals and amino acids including significant amounts of iron, niacin (vitamin B3), riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamin (vitamin B1), potassium and essential amino acids leucine and serine. As the highest recorded source of vitamin C on the planet, no other form can give your body so much compacted energy and support.

There are a myriad of clinical studies indicating the accepted benefits of supplementation with Camu-Camu. Choose only Camu-Camu products that are pure unadulterated and non-irradiated. You do not want a Camu product that is mixed with synthetic vitamin C or ascorbic acid and/or diluted with yucca or maltidextrin.

The Camu fruit, also known as the “feel good fruit” offers a broad range of health promoting properties such as:

• supports immune function

• promotes healthy skin, hair, gums and nails

• assists in managing adrenal gland fatigue

• enhances memory functions and positive emotions

• helpful in reduction of stress, anxiety, and pain

• aids in anti-aging processes

• suppresses appetite for natural weight control

Sustainable growing and harvesting of this wild Rainforest fruit is contributing to the sustainable development of the Amazon River basin helping the natives maintain their traditional ways of life and keeping the rainforest alive and thriving for future generations. A leading responsible advocate for Camu-Camu is the Amazon Herb Company which offers the fruit in liquid, powder and skin care products. For more information contact Amazon Herb Shop at 1-800-239-5859

How can we get better sleep? After last month’s review of sleep causing disturbances and our lifestyles of unremitting stress and adrenal gland fatigue, thank goodness there are many sleep helpers available in our health food stores and pharmacies. Some of which have existed for centuries. Cal-Mag

Calcium and magnesium in any form can be helpful for calming and sleep as well as relief from muscle cramps and menstrual cramps. Magnesium is one of the most wonderful minerals and is difficult to come by in the SAD (standard American diet). It is essential to prohibit the spasms of coronary arteries and brain arteries which are the final blow in heart attacks and strokes. Magnesium, especially in the salt form, magnesium oxide, citrate and sulfate are also laxative and move water into the large intestines to promote more bowel activity which is particularly welcome in the high, dry, Nevada desert. Chelated magnesium is bound to an amino acid and is better absorbed in the small intestine and is more sedative. Magnesium aspartate and glycinate are representatives of this group. Many people find that the basic cal-mag is the only sleep helper they need.

Herbs

Countless herbs are available for sleep and calming and have been around for centuries. Beginning with Chamomile tea and tinctures and moving into combinations of herbs such as Mugwort, Valerian root, Vervain, St. John’s Wort, White Nettle blossoms, Hops, Cowslip blossom, Lemon balm leaf, Dill fruit, Pulsatilla, Avena Sativa (green oats), Red Squill bulb, Passion flower, Rhodiola rosea root extract and Magnolia bark. There are many sedative Chinese herbs that include Ziziphus spinosa, Ramulus uncariae extract, Jujube seed extract and Silk tree bark extract. You can go online and find great write-ups on all these herbs, and many companies that provide them.

Amino Acids and Neurotransmitters

Melatonin is probably the most well known neurotransmitter for sleep. It is made in the pineal gland (pine cone shaped) in the middle of the brain. It is secreted at night and turns down all of the signaling hormones in the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. It has a very broad therapeutic dosage range from .25 mg to 25 mg and everyone responds a little differently to it. At 3 mg before bed some people find it very difficult to get out of bed the next morning and others can take 25 mg and find it has virtually no effect in helping their sleep. Melatonin is made from serotonin, the neurotransmitter famous for treating depression, it is also calming. Serotonin is made from tryptophan, the amino acid and has been used for decades to help sleep and mood. Tryptophan competes for transport into the brain with other amino acids however the in between step in making serotonin is called 5-HTP, 5 hydroxytryptophan, which is very easily transported into the brain and rapidly restores depleted serotonin. 5 HTP, from 100mg to 300 mg before bed frequently improves sleep quality and mood.

Taurine, actually a fatty acid is calming and improves the utilization of magnesium. Phosphatidylserine helps to stabilize cortisol (cortisone) so it doesn’t spike in the night to turn on emergency blood sugar balancing. L-theanine is another calming amino acid which aid sleep and is great for behavioral control in ADD kids. GABA, gamma aminobutryic acid works great like patent drug tranquilizers without side effects. Beta, phenyl GABA has been used in Russia for decades and is very well liked by patients.

Homeopathics

The Homeopathic Repertory by Robin Murphy, ND devotes an entire chapter to sleep disturbances. Of course, they are all based on the individual’s personality and nature of the disturbance. Some of the most famous include, Coffea cruda, Pulsatilla, Stramonium, Nux vomica, Gelsemium, Avena sativa, Lachesis, Sulphur, Hyoscyamus, Belladonna, Argentum nitricum, Arsenicum, Medorrhinum, Rhus tox and Mercurius. Go online and look up your homeopathic type in regards these remedies, which are also beneficial for sleep.

Drugs

Although many patent drugs are very harmful, especially for long term use for sleep, some people do very well on diphenhydramine, good old Benadryl. Just don’t take it in combination with acetaminophen, which can cause liver and kidney damage.

My anxiety started many years ago very mildly and very seldom. At that time I would get a little dizzy and my heart would race, not really understanding what it was. When I went to the doctor(s), I informed them about what I was experiencing, so they put me on Xanax.

I was taking Xanax for quite a few years, before I would go out in public and sometimes before bed. It was actually helping me a lot; I didn’t experience any major anxiety for a long time. Unfortunately, there came a time in my life that I stopped taking the Xanax and stopped caring about myself. I just gave up on everything and anything that I ever cared about. When times got really bad, I experienced some things that turned my anxiety into full blown panic attacks.

Experiencing a panic attack for the first time was one of the scariest things I have ever experienced. You do not even feel it coming on and all of a sudden you feel like you are going to die. The dizziness, the blurred vision, the rapid heart beat and the hyperventilation were all signs that I was about ready to faint. After I started having these panic attacks, I finally made it back to the doctor. That is when they put me back on drugs.

The drugs worked, but they weren’t good for me. Xanax is highly addictive, and with my addictive personality I had to choose
another route.

About 11 months ago, I started taking 2 L-Tryptophan Complete before I went to bed and weaned myself off of my prescribed meds. Immediately my mind stopped racing and I could fall asleep right away. My night terrors were limited and I could finally sleep without waking up in fear.

My anxiety was still pretty bad throughout the day, and I didn’t want to take the L-Trypto- phan Complete because I figured it would make me tired, and I wouldn’t be able to get things done.

Finally, after many weeks of my heart racing and constantly coughing, I decided to try taking 1 L-Tryptophan Complete. About 10 minutes after taking it, my coughing was gone and my heart rate slowed down. I was slightly tired, but it was no where near what a drug made me feel like, and I seemed to actually focus better, since I was more relaxed. It is truly a great feeling to know that I have a solution for my anxiety when it creeps up on me. Drugs are not an option for me today.

Although L-Tryptophan first became available over forty years ago, researchers now are focusing on the fact that both genetic and dietary deficiencies can block our proper metabolism of nutrients, including L-Tryptophan.

Just as explorers map trails through the wilderness, medical researchers map the biochemical pathways that amino acids follow while doing their job in your body. There are many pathways in L-Tryptophan metabolism, and each one of these pathways is composed of steps.

Each step, in turn, is controlled by a specific, cellular enzyme. These enzymes are the product of your individual genetic expression and can vary greatly from one person to another. Unlike digestive enzymes, though, you cannot take cellular enzymes in a capsule. Furthermore, cellular enzymes cannot work alone. Enzymes are as useless as a car without wheels if they lack critical coenzymes (vitamins – B6) and cofactors (minerals) that make them run.

The concept is simple: to ensure that L-Tryptophan produces and sustains serotonin, our job has been to identify these coenzymes and cofactors and logically combine them in L-Tryptophan Complete. This careful combining of the right tools for the right job ensures that your cellular enzymes work, and you receive all the benefits of L-Tryptophan that Nature intended.

L-Tryptophan Complete was first inspired about eight years ago by the fact that many peoples around the Earth are so poorly nourished they fail to get proper benefit from the food or supplements that they do receive. Donations of products to starving nations can be wasted for lack of a single nutrient.

Even in prosperous countries, genetic deficiencies, unwise diets, and environmental factors can block the enzymes that metabolize essential nutrients. If you have ever wondered why a supplement did not work, this may be why.

The Serotonin / L-Tryptophan Link

L-Tryptophan is the essential nutrient from which serotonin is made. L-Tryptophan is not a drug and works by feeding the biochemical pathways that keep you alive. In contrast to man-made chemicals, L-Tryptophan occurs naturally in your diet, and your body was born with the ability to process L-Tryptophan without side effects.

Dozens of research papers emphatically prove that supplemental L-Tryptophan increases serotonin levels in the brain. Less well-known, though, is the fact that only a small percentage of ingested L-Tryptophan goes down your brain serotonin pathway. Increasing that percentage even a small amount can provide a dramatic boost to your brain serotonin levels. A simple boost in serotonin has helped many experience restful sleep and brighter, happier moods than they have enjoyed in years. (For those who are interested in digging deeper and wanting the scientific perspective of what happens inside your cells go to www.lidtke.com).

In short, the proper combination of cofactors and coenzymes drives the conversion of L-Tryptophan to serotonin. Nevertheless, we have found that we can do better. Very recent research shows that curcumin, the same curcumin that reduces the risk of cancer in experimental animals, also helps slow the breakdown of serotonin into inactive metabolites. Curcumin in L-Tryptophan Complete, then, helps to maintain and protect the serotonin generated by all the
other ingredients.

Whether you are worn out by common stresses of this world, or whether you suffer from an unrecognized imbalance, we believe L-Tryptophan Complete is the best, and most natural choice for raising your serotonin levels.

Feel better, sleep better. Be at peace in body, mind and spirit.

Benefits: Improves sleep, Soothes nervous irritability, improves mood, Helps relieve muscle pain, Reduces the craving for carbohydrates, Helps curb aggressive or violent behavior, Reduces premenstrual symptoms

L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and a cornerstone of normal mood, normal sleep patterns, reduced anxiety, and the alleviation of binge cravings. Because L-Tryptophan is essential, no other amino acid, vitamin, mineral, herb or man-made chemical can take the place of L-Tryptophan.

L-Tryptophan is routinely added to baby food and hospital IV solutions, where it is essential for growth and life. Furthermore, plasma amino-acid profiles hundreds of patients demonstrate that L-Tryptophan is the amino acid most lacking in our diet.

Ouch! We have all experienced pain. In fact, more than 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, pain is the primary reason why people seek the advice of health professionals, and it is also the number one reason people use alternative medicine.

Pain occurs when nerve endings become irritated. It can be exacerbated by nutritional imbalances, lack of sleep, hormonal factors, and other stresses. In general terms, pain is symptomatic of some type of dysfunction and inflammation in the body.

Basically, there are two problems with pain control drugs:

They interfere artificially with the body’s usual inflammation responses.

They have detrimental side effects.

Remember the FDA withdrawal of Vioxx? Lauded as a superdrug, during an important study it was found to cause increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Meanwhile, even the most commonly used pain-relievers – nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen – can cause intestinal tract ulcers and other problems. These dangers have stimulated a growing interest in natural pain remedies.

Freedom from pain is the single desire of those suffering from pain. The question is: Can relief be achieved without side effects? In this article, we introduce a promising proprietary formula that is currently being introduced in natural products stores. Although this complex may be helpful in treating a wide variety of disorders, we focus on its pain relief and anti-inflammatory actions.

Inflammation is the beginning of all pain, both acute and chronic. Relieve inflammation and you relieve pain. Many medical experts believe inflammation to be the cause of 80-90% of all disease. Inflammation is caused by the release of a prostaglandin (PGE2) and is sustained by an enzyme called cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). It’s interesting that cancer cells are surrounded by an abnormally heavy concentration of COX-2 enzymes. With much controversy as to the side effects of anti-inflammatory medications, what can a person do naturally?

Relief is on the way. Common herbs from India such as: curcumin, boswellia and turmeric have been found to be an even better anti-inflammatory (without harmful side effects) than cortisone, which is one of the most powerful of all the steroids.
Curcumin is well known in the herbal and nutritional field. In one doubleblind study, curcumin matched cortisone as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory.

Recently, scientists in India isolated a sub-particle of curcumin known as a curcuminoid, which is approximately 100 times as potent as curcumin in reducing pain and inflammation. Curcuminoids are sub-particles, which make up the supplement blend Curamin. Curcumin has several of these curcuminoids which are very specific for COX-2 inhibition. Curcumin is derived from the herb turmeric and curcuminoid is the most powerful and active ingredient for chronic and acute pain relief.

By combining curcumin, curcuminoids, boswellia, DLPA and nattokinase, you have a natural and powerful anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. These ingredients have been proven time and again to be highly effective and safe for extended use. All are contained in the supplement Curamin.

When you use natural ingredients such as turmeric or its active compound, curcumin, you are using wisdom of the ages from 5,000 years ago. Turmeric and curcumin have been traditionally used to support individuals who are suffering from pain and inflammation. It is as effective as any medication, and with no side effects. But if this is not enough, over 2,000 references to articles on turmeric and curcumin have been published in peer-reviewed professional journals.

Curamin supplement blends all natural ingredients to change the quality of your life. Choose to live pain free and enjoy life to the fullest.

Soy. You cannot get away from this supposedly protein rich “health” food. It can be found in almost every aspect of a typical North American’s diet of fast, processed and packaged products including crackers, cookies, breads, baked goods, canned foods, soymilk, soy burgers, soy energy bars, soy ice cream, soy cereal, etc. And, because soy is FDA approved, it really doesn’t have to be listed on the label. If you were to eat soy in an Asian country you would probably reap the popularly touted benefits.

However, the United States, in its infinite wisdom of “we know what is best for you,” decided to improve on Mother Nature by genetically modifying, pasteurizing etc. until the soy you are encouraged to eat in the U.S. is NOT the soy the rest of the world gets to enjoy.

Americans do not eat “whole soy foods” as do the Asians. Instead, they eat factory foods containing industrially processed soy substances made from “Roundup Ready” soybeans (soybeans that have been genetically engineered…sometimes called recombinant DNA engineering) created by Monsanto. Western food processors then separate these altered soybeans into protein and oil, which is no longer considered a “whole food.” “A “whole food” behaves differently in the body when you remove or alter one of its components.”

In addition, today’s high-tech processing methods fail to remove the anti-nutrients and toxins that are naturally present in soybeans. The anti-nutrients and toxins are then changed into toxic and carcinogenic residues by the high temperatures, high pressure, alkali and acid baths, and petroleum solvents of the processing methods.

A clever public relations campaign by the American soy industry has convinced Americans that Asians are healthier because they eat soy, soy and more soy. On closer observations of Asian eating habits it has been found that “Asians eat small amounts of soy, as condiments in the diet, not as a food staple.” The current health trend is that if some soy is good for your health then the more soy you eat the better your health will be. Current studies show that this has not proven to be the case.

On the subject of soy in American foods, Dr. Joseph Mercola says, “It’s ironic that soy has become so accepted as a health food when, as Dr. Kaayla Daniel, author of the groundbreaking book The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food, states, thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility–even cancer and heart disease.”

When Dr. Daniel was asked, “In terms of their effects on people’s health, which of the soy food products on the market would you say were the worst?” She replied, “The worst by far is soy formula because it’s usually the only food nourishing the developing baby. Soy formula contains phytoestrogens that can disrupt the baby’s thyroid, reproductive development and toxic levels of manganese that can cause neurological and brain damage associated with ADD/ADHD and violent tendencies.

Babies on soy formula are also at higher risk for gastrointestinal damage, allergies, asthma, poor mineral absorption and lower intelligence. Contrary to popular belief, soy formula was never used traditionally in Asia.” Furthermore, studies have shown that the above mentioned “possible” conditions are worsened in male babies. “The average daily dose of soy estrogens in soy formula (38mg) is higher than the amounts that cause thyroid problems and endocrine disruption in adults.”

Dr. Daniel adds that in adults she often sees thyroid damage, infertility, menstruation problems, loss of sex drive, hairloss and digestive problems which she attributes to the ingestion of altered soy products. Are there any soy foods in America you can safely eat? Yes!
But, they should be the old-fashioned fermented soy products such as miso, tempeh, natto, shoyu, tamari and edamame (the green immature soybeans). Tofu is a precipitated product and is considered to be less healthy. Soy sprouts are not healthy and should not be eaten. Traditionally they are used for pharmaceuticals, not as a food.

Experts agree that the genetically altered soy products available in North America are creating or contributing to lowered immunity and health problems. It is not just the fact that we are eating genetically altered soy, it is also that we eat so much of it. The challenge is to find a manufactured food product that doesn’t contain soy. And, in addition to the soy products we intentionally eat, there is the hidden soy in our foods. Soy is hidden behind words like “boullion,” “natural flavor” and “textured plant protein” in food labels.
To Soy or Not to Soy? This is a question that requires educated thought and research by each individual. The soy products available to us have potential for good. But, there is equal, if not more potential for harm.

No matter what you call it—cystitis, bladder infection, urinary tract infection or UTI—the symptoms are a real pain in the bladder. You have the sudden urge to pee, but when you make it to the bathroom you feel more of a burning sensation than relief. And if you don’t nip it in the bud, that burning can progress to a full-blown infection that includes fever, chills, lower abdominal pain and/or blood in the urine.

About one out of two women will have a UTI at least once during her lifetime. But men can also get bladder infections, especially if they have an enlarged prostate. Also, a large percentage of individuals with spinal cord injuries suffer from UTIs, especially young men who have had accidents, typically motorcycle accidents, or who have sustained injuries as a result of combat.

Prevent UTIs Naturally
The typical treatment for urinary tract infections is a round of antibiotics. The problem is, antibiotics kill both the good and bad bacteria in your gut, which leads to other health problems. The good news is that D-Mannose can prevent UTIs before they take hold.

What is D-Mannose?
It is a simple sugar structurally related to glucose, that is found in many fruits, including peaches, apples, oranges, cranberries, and blueberries. It is also produced in your body. D-mannose is considered a safe and natural nutritional food supplement. Since it isn’t metabolized, it doesn’t interfere with blood sugar regulation, and is therefore safe for diabetics.

According to researchers at the Washington University (WU) School of Medicine in St. Louis, most UTIs start when Escherichia coli (E. coli), a microorganism that lives in the digestive tract and is found in the anal area, invade the bladder and penetrate a protective coating of the superficial cells that line the bladder. In most cases, urine flow washes out bacteria from the bladder. But the cell wall of E. coli bacteria has tiny finger-like projections that contain complex molecules called lectins on their surface. These lectins are cellular glue that binds the bacteria to the bladderwall so they cannot be easily rinsed out by urination.

The chemical structure of D-Mannose causes it to stick to E. coli bacteria, maybe even more tenaciously than E.coli adheres to human cells. Although the mechanism of how it works is complicated, theoretically, if enough D-mannose is present in the urine, it binds to the bacteria and prevents them from attaching to the urinary tract lining. Studies show that D-mannose reduces bacteria in rats in a dose dependent manner. In fact, D-mannose was found to significantly reduce bacteria in one day.

Normal urination, therefore, with a sufficient level of D-mannose present, becomes a simple and effective treatment for treating and preventing UTIs.
E. coli cells coated by D-mannose in the urine become unglued and get flushed right out of the body. The beauty about D-mannose is that you can take it year-round without any side effects, which means that you do not have to wait until symptoms appear.

How is D-mannose different from cranberry extract?
Although D-mannose is found in cranberries, cranberries do not contain enough of the sugar to have the same effect.
At the same time, cranberry extract contains proanthocyanidins that also prevent E. coli from adhering to the urethra
and bladder. Cranberry extract also has a potent immune-stimulating effect. The two, when taken together, produce a beneficial synergistic effect on the urinary tract system.

How does E. coli invade the bladder in the first place?
You can get a very bad case of food poisoning from E. coli contamination, which is why you see signs in restaurant and grocery restrooms demanding all food workers to wash their hands, but with the exception of a few, rare dangerous forms, E. coli is a healthy part of our normal bowel bacteria. The problem is, when E-coli exits the bowel, where it belongs, going into the bladder, you can get a UTI. The bacteria first travel to the urethra (the canal through which urine is discharged from the bladder) and this can happen in a number of ways:

In young girls it may occur when they wipe from back to front, instead of from front to back.

A woman’s urethra is short and its opening is near the anus, which allows E. coli quick access to the bladder.

In some women sexual intercourse seems to set the stage for an E-coli invasion.

Women who use a diaphragm are more likely to develop a UTI than women who use other forms of birth control. Recently, researchers found that women whose partners use a condom with spermicidal foam also tend to have growth of E. coli bacteria in the vagina.

Catheters placed in the urethra and bladder often allow invasion of E. coli.

The natural flow of things
The urinary system is structured to rid the body of waste matter. Urine, which is sterile, leaves the kidneys and travels down two thin tubes called ureters to the bladder. The ureters are about eight to 10 inches long. Muscles in the ureter walls constantly tighten and relax to force urine downward away from the kidneys. The ureters and bladder normally prevent urine from backing up toward the kidneys and the flow of urine from the bladder helps wash bacteria out of the body. The prostate gland in men produces secretions that slow bacterial growth, and immune defenses in both men and women prevent infection. Despite these safeguards, urinary tract infections are a serious health problem affecting millions of people each year.

Although D-mannose is still relatively unknown in the mainstream medical community, and it has not been tested in human trials, thousands of people who suffer from urinary tract infections swear by its ability to prevent and heal UTIs. Additionally, health practitioners “in the know” have had great results when prescribing it for their patients who have had to resort to antibiotics in the past.
