The methods and processes vary from each philosophy, but the end goal is the same– to achieve awareness of your inner self by suspending conscious thought. Depending on where the particular philosophy of meditation is derived will determine how deeply spiritual the process may be. Eastern cultures have a spiritual philosophy referring to meditation, while Western cultures tend to take a less religious approach. In the most recent years, meditation refers to the actions involved in quieting the mind and body, allowing oneself to become aware of the self inside your consciousness.

Whether you are looking for a spiritual awakening, or just a way to relax after a stressful day, meditation can be a useful tool. When used properly, over long periods of time, it can help heal your body, mind, and soul by allowing your mind to be stress free, if only for a few minutes at a time.

Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD |

Adrenal support dosing has a very long therapeutic curve. It is nice to start with sleeping eight to nine hours per night, and to enjoy occasional vacations when the stress is off. Reducing stress at the work place, at home and with the kids is important, but how to resolve the stress of estranged spouses bent on revenge, sick relatives, crazy siblings battling over the inheritance, financial collapse and loss of drive to do anything is much more difficult. These people need adrenal help.

I always begin adrenal support with good nutrients important for the adrenal gland, especially good sea salt such as Cheltic salt, or Real Salt. When the adrenals are weak, you leak salt and minerals. Some low adrenal patients take ½ tsp of sea salt in water in the morning and after lunch to improve their energy. Vitamin C, B vitamins (pantothenic acid, B5), vitamin A, chromium, EFA’s (essential fatty acids such as fish oil and primrose oil) and good sources of cholesterol, such as egg yolks, butter and animal protein if possible, are all important. Vegans need to lead a less stressful life and supplement if they are stressed (B12 at least). Of course the liver makes cholesterol, but many livers are very toxic and all the adrenal hormones are made from cholesterol, which can only be consumed from animal sources. Acupuncture, psychological counseling, chiropractic, musculoskeletal therapies, energetic support, color puncture and every body balancing, stress reducing therapeutic modality can help the adrenals to rebuild.

My very favorite adrenal support over the last 36 years is an adrenal complex shot with B12 (hydroxycobalamin) and folic acid. I have it compounded with hydrocortisone 2 mg per cc, DHEA .2mg per cc, pregnenelone .2 mg per cc in a sesame or cotton seed oil base for its time-release properties, with one mg of B12 and 10 mg of folic acid. An average sized woman usually responds well to 1 ½ cc of adrenal complex, smaller women 1 cc, and larger women and men 2 cc plus 1 cc of B12 and 1 cc of folic acid.

This is an old feel-good shot that has been around since the 1950’s from Hollywood, (thank you Alan Nittler, MD and Gary Gordon, MD.) I learned this therapy from Dr. Nittler in 1975 in Santa Cruz, California, and from his book A New Breed of Doctor. He used adrenal cortex extract in those days, but it is no longer available, and this adrenal complex bears a rough equivalency to that product. This shot gives a week of blood sugar stability for most patients and can be done weekly, two or three times per week or daily, depending on the needs of the patient and reducing the frequency of dosing as the patient gets better. Remember that the normal adrenal cortex makes 30 mg to 200 mgs of hydrocortisone per day.

Low dose adrenal support is frequently very helpful for energy, sleep, headaches, gastritis (heart burn) and anti-anxiety qualities, and does not suppress the hypothalamic, pituitary adrenal axis. This intramuscular, time-release shot is given in the upper-outer quadrant of the hip. Isocorts or other oral adrenal tissue support are always great; be careful of whole adrenal extracts as they may contain some adrenalin, which may be too stimulating for some sensitive people.

Adrenal rebuilding, adaptogenic herbs are great, such as Cordyceps, Rodiola rosea, Ashwaganda, Maca, Eluthrococcus senticosis (Siberian Ginseng) and many more. Importantly, some patients are so adrenal-depleted that they really need hydrocortisone tablets a’ la William McK. Jeffries, MD a co-discoverer of hydrocortisone in 1949.

In his book The Safe Uses of Cortisone he presents many cases of successful treatment of adrenal deficient patients with 5 mg of cortisol (hydrocortisone/Cortef), four times per day, or 10 mg four times per day when ill. Some patients prefer 10 mg AM and noon, or some variation of this dosage regimen. Cortisol can also be compounded in a time-release preparation, which needs to be dosed less frequently and is more convenient for patients. It is interesting that even when adrenal-fatigue patients need larger doses of Cortef to maintain normal energy levels they don’t appear Cushingoid (puffy, moon faced), and they feel great.

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.

Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile organic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.

Try this at home: Squeeze the peel of a ripe orange. The fragrant residue on your hand is full of essential oils.

In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends towards more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications.

There’s no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it–pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic–or the reasons we seek it out–a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management–massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.

Wellness and body care have a long tradition throughout human history. In ancient Greece and Rome, purification rituals and massage were an integral part of life. Seeking balance of mind, body and spirit was a high priority in their teachings. The famous Latin saying mens sana in corpore sano, which means “a healthy mind in a healthy body,” is as true today as it was back in the day of our ancestors.

As humans, we’re hardwired to seek out and enjoy physical touch. Touch, when administered in a safe, caring and loving way, causes our brains to release a calm-inducing hormone/neurotransmitter called oxytocin, also known as the “cuddle” hormone.

Discussion about oxytocin initially focused on its roles in controlling contractions during childbirth, stimulating lactation post-birth and bringing people closer to each other. Further studies show that oxytocin’s relevance to our lives extends beyond bonding and birth. When this hormone is flowing freely, it puts us in a peaceful, happy state of mind; it helps us feel emotionally connected.

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related; and perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be optimistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:

• Decreased anxiety

• Enhanced sleep quality

• Greater energy

• Improved concentration

• Increased circulation

• Reduced fatigue

• Strengthened immune system

• Pain relief

• Deep relaxation

Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance that bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.

Getting a massage can do you a world of good, and getting a massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll be and how youthful you’ll remain, with each passing year.

There are many different massage and bodywork modalities to choose from, such as Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, clinical massage, lymphatic drainage, and gentle hands on techniques like Reiki, Polarity, Zero Balancing, Acupressure or Craniosacral therapy, which allow you to address specific needs and enjoy variety.

Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in health. A reminder: just because massage feels like a pampering treat doesn’t make it any less therapeutic. Consider massage appointments as a necessary component of your health and wellness plan.

Feeling Overwhelmed? Don’t let the situation get you down.

The causes may be health, finances, relationships or too many demands. You may be feeling that things are out of control, that you’re a puppet on a string, or that you’re trapped in a situation and cannot see a way out. Whatever the cause of the stress, feeling overwhelmed is almost always made up of a combination of stresses and a feeling that you don’t have the physical or mental resources to deal with them. Some people experience this state of overwhelm as a deep feeling of dread every morning when they awaken, which may feel like something foreign that has become a part of them.

This state of mind can easily bring on aches and pains, ailments and even disease; so the first priority is to change what you’re thinking and talking about. This isn’t easy, but it can become a habit with enough practice, and the results are worth the work. The first step is to know what you do want, on a subject that is completely different from what’s stressing you out. If you’re worried about health, know what kind of vacation you would like. The power of combined imagination and emotion can mentally take you far away from whatever is bothering you. If you think that technique has no positive effect, no relation to reality, you’re wrong.

Every thought has a vibrational frequency, an electromagnetic charge. Every thought affects your body, your personal affairs and the people around you. Scientists are beginning to understand this on a quantum physics level. This fact is a big part of why vibrational medicine works. Dr. Bruce Lipton’s book The Biology of Belief is based on the premise that your biology is controlled by your beliefs.

So how do we put this to practical use right now? Use your imagination and emotion to create a scenario of something you’d really like to do…something that gets your enthusiasm going. This vision has to be fleshed out, complete. It has to have color, shape, certain scenery, high emotion and you must engage the five senses. You must know what that activity would feel like, smell like, taste like; what emotions you would feel while participating in it. In other words, take your mind off of reality as you see it now. Thinking and talking incessantly about that present reality will just create more of the same. We think about 50,000 thoughts a day, but they’re almost always the same thoughts. So, we keep creating the same reality, the same “day” over and over. The more we complain about it, the more we recreate it. It is like a vicious cycle, like Groundhog Day. Change your mind and you change your life.

At the same time, vary your daily routine. If you’ve wondered why you get tired after doing the same thing all day, it’s because your body needs a mixture of mental and physical tasks. When paperwork or thinking exhausts you, take a break and do something physical. Don’t bore yourself into a state of overwhelm.

Find things to laugh about. When you laugh, or even smile, the muscles of your face send a message to your brain that tells it all is well. The brain then causes the body to release certain pain-killing or feel-good chemicals and hormones, the opposite of being overwhelmed.

Learn to say no. Turning down a request may give you a feeling of guilt. Remember, guilt is a learned emotion, and the learned feeling of guilt makes saying no almost impossible to do. But you’ll have to do it occasionally or you’ll find yourself always on the run for someone else, and becoming overwhelmed.

Do one thing at a time, no matter how proud you are of multi-tasking, and do it well. Our conscious minds can only handle a few things at a time without causing stress, which adds up to the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Take care of problems and tasks immediately. If you need to make an unpleasant phone call or deal with an unpleasant person, decide what has to be done and do it now. Go through the mail once, discarding or handling incoming paperwork once. This creates a feeling of control, which is the opposite of feeling overwhelmed.

Talk out problems with friends and family once. Find a solution and don’t keep repeating and beating the drum of the problem. That just perpetuates it. For people who want to focus on the negative and repeat the same problem over and over, refuse to engage in that habit. Otherwise you’ll drag yourself down and become overwhelmed.

Simplify. Decide what’s important to accomplish and don’t try to do too much. By now you know what you can accomplish in a certain time frame. Don’t set yourself up to become overwhelmed.

Easy on the caffeine. Stress and caffeine build upon one another. That jolt of adrenaline from caffeine can lead to another cup of coffee, and eventually exhaustion. Then, you can’t sleep at night because of the caffeine. When stress pushes you into mood swings, caffeine pushes you harder and you end up overwhelmed.

Make time to meditate, or sit quietly by yourself thinking of all the things you’re grateful for. That quiet time clears your mind and makes it possible for your day to just “smooth along.” Find half an hour to take a “power nap,” which can re-charge your mind and body.

Get some exercise. Our bodies were designed to move. Scientists know that exercise lowers our risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, colon cancer and stroke; it increases longevity and helps diabetic’s better manage their condition. It has been shown that use of the long leg muscles during walking or running can dramatically reduce depression.

Sign up for a yoga class. Dating back over 5000 years, yoga is the oldest practice of self-development. It has been found to reduce stress, help you sleep better, help with allergies and asthma, lower blood pressure as well as heart rate.
Get into the habit of breathing deeply. That’s probably the fastest and easiest way to reduce stress. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, as if you were blowing out a candle. Repeat this four or five times until you feel your lungs expanding and taking in even more air.

Fix your environment. Don’t live in a world of clutter. Learn how to get your stuff organized. Your environment is a mirror image of your mind and vice versa. If you’re surrounded by clutter, you cannot think clearly or be very efficient. You’re creating a state of overwhelm.

Don’t sweat the small stuff and spend more time with positive people. Focus on what you WANT in life, not on what you don’t want. In this way, you’ll leave overwhelm behind.

For many years, massage has been viewed as a stress relieving luxury. However, in the past decade or so, the general public and other healthcare professionals are starting to recognize that massage therapy is an effective healthcare approach. Massage therapy, along with chiropractic, physical therapy and other natural health modalities are being sought out more often as an alternative option to prescription drugs and surgery. Massage therapy is different from any other health care modality, as the therapist often spends an hour in constant physical contact during the course of treatment. Massage therapy has proven to be a very effective course of treatment for an injury, such as frozen shoulder, or an illness, such as fibromyalgia. A doctor (medical or chiropractic or other) should be contacted to rule out contraindications before starting a treatment program.

Frozen shoulder is a term used to describe conditions that result in pain in the shoulder joint. Pain often starts as a result of trauma to the shoulder, poor posture or pathological issues, or it may appear for some unknown reason. As the name suggests, over time restriction or adhesions of the joint capsule develop, resulting in reduced movement of the shoulder, accompanied with pain upon movement in certain directions. A massage treatment program over a period of time, with the approval of a physician, can be very effective in improving the range of motion and pain associated with a frozen shoulder.

A case study of a 55-year-old woman who developed a frozen shoulder, as the result of a trauma to the shoulder, is an example of how massage can be a beneficial therapy. She was unable to lift her arm to more than one inch in abduction away from her hip (abduction is the movement of a limb away from the body). With the encouragement and approval of her doctor, she received a therapeutic massage once a week for three months. After three months, she had little to no pain remaining and was able to lift her arm up to her ear.
Fibromyalgia is another chronic condition where massage therapy has been known to alleviate pain, stiffness, and tenderness of the muscles, tendons, and joints. While the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, many sufferers experience sleep disturbance, morning stiffness, tingling, anxiety, and depression. Gentle massage work is vital in the healing process providing much needed stress relief and relaxation.

Massage therapy can benefit many different injuries and illnesses. Discuss potential treatment options with your healthcare team.

Most people have not heard of CranioSacral Therapy, a light touch technique which can create dramatic improvements in your life. Particularly for those who are trying to recover from injury, CranioSacral Therapy can shorten healing time and reduce pain by releasing tensions deep in the body.

What is CranioSacral Therapy? CranioSacral Therapy deals with the flow of energy through the body. If any part of the body experiences a disruption of that energy, that part does not function properly. Since all the nerves of the body pass through the spine, and nerves carry the body’s energy impulses back and forth to the brain, it is essential to keep these nerve pathways free from injury, compression, swelling or misalignment. The term CranioSacral is referring to the area between the top of the spine, the cranium, and the bottom of the spine, the sacrum. This therapy focuses on repairing and maintaining energy flow between those two points, and thus throughout the body.

Let’s look at what happens after a bad fall or a car accident. Impact causes misalignments of the spine and other body parts. Chiropractic and massage can treat most of the injury with therapy directed at bones, joints and muscles. If even a small amount of the nerve trauma remains, there can be ongoing discomfort and pain. The injury seems to never fully subside.

In the same way, long-term stress affects the body in ways similar to injuries caused by sudden trauma. Stress is like a slow-motion train wreck. Your body can only handle so much prolonged stress and strain before tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord. This can compromise the function of the central nervous system and the performance of nearly every other system in your body.

All the nerve pathways through the body are encased in sheaths of protective material. If any part of a nerve sheath is damaged or compressed, the nerve does not function properly and some part of the body suffers. In CranioSacral Therapy, the therapist identifies the area of restriction and applies gentle pressure to release any restrictions they find, allowing the entire body to relax and self-correct. This is all done while the client is fully clothed.

CranioSacral Therapy has been found to be effective in relieving migraines, chronic neck and back pain, stress-related disorders, spinal cord injuries, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, motor-coordination disorders, central nervous system disorders, ADD/ADHD, among others. Because it is so gentle CranioSacral Therapy can be effective for all ages, from newborns to seniors.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a healing method that supports people in moving through the grimy and murky uncertainty of where life has taken them. It is much more than a “coping” mechanism, as it is a supportive tool in self-empowerment. Reiki embodies the very essence and consciousness of the new planetary era we have been moving into by supporting release of the old. Suffering and discomforts one might experience during the transition are minimized and peace of mind is re-established. We start to recognize how we are not at the mercy of anything. In overcoming these fears we receive personal growth support with unlimited potential.

It is non-invasive, gentle, yet powerful, and an easy-to-learn healing technique that promotes stress reduction and relaxation with many healing benefits. Reiki is a complimentary treatment that works in harmony to improve the effectiveness and benefits of all other types of therapy, treatment and healing modalities. It is not meant to replace professional medical advice and Reiki practitioners do not diagnose or prescribe medication. Reiki helps to stimulate the body’s own natural healing abilities for both psychological and organic diseases, while supporting a deep state of relaxation during that process.

Written by Nancy Pfaff, CCHt, NLP

Have you noticed that some people seem to speak to groups like they were born for it? Don’t believe it. For most of us, it takes overcoming a lot of anxiety in order to take the chance of presenting ourselves in front of either strangers or colleagues. This anxiety is also known as stage fright. Quite often stage fright arises in a mere anticipation of a performance, often a long time ahead. It has numerous manifestations: fluttering or pounding heart, tremor in the hands and legs, diarrhea, facial nerve tics, dry mouth and more. Any of you who watched the head of General Motors being grilled in a congressional committee recently noticed the tic he had of repeatedly squinting his eyes. Even the most experienced leaders have their times of anxiety.

What is that anxiety all about? “Why do I feel like such a wimp when I notice my legs shaking as I go up to a podium to speak?” you may ask.

First, you’re not a wimp. You’re just human, and need an inner shift in your subconscious mind. The theory of mind provides some insight for us. About 12% of our mind is consciousness, our waking self. The other approximately 88% is our subconscious mind. Down in that subconscious twilight is the reason for our anxiety—a memory of some fearful experience that has coupled itself to public self-presentation. Using hypnosis, can relax the conscious mind enough to access the subconscious mind and uncouple that experience. Then a person’s anxiety can be transformed. After that the person is only minimally bothered by anxiety if at all.

Meghan had a terrible experience as a young child, at least viewed from her young perspective. Her piano teacher had her students preparing for a recital, and they had to memorize their pieces. Meghan was so proud to have her piece memorized and able to perform it perfectly. She was eagerly looking forward to showing off at the recital. Then the teacher told her another student would play her piece, and she had to choose another one. The wind went out of Meghan’s sails. She tried to memorize the new piece, but couldn’t always get it right. At the recital she made many mistakes in front of a large crowd. She told about feeling her face burning with embarrassment until she could escape back into the audience.

Now an adult wanting to speak to large groups, Meghan’s anxiety was stopping her. Here is how she worked with uncoupling this shame from public performance through hypnosis. First she went into trance facilitated by her own hypnotherapist. Trance is a state in which one is very relaxed and able to focus in a powerful way on whatever issue is presented. Then she was helped to find that experience in the subconscious mind. Her hypnotherapist asked her, “What did the child need?”, and then said, “Give her what she needs.” As the scene replayed itself in trance, Meghan the adult, went to the teacher and said, “Meghan (the child) will be playing the piece she has worked on and is ready to play. It is not fair to her to change her piece so late in the game.” Then as the adult, she viewed herself, the child, playing her piece perfectly, with great joy. The subconscious cannot tell the difference between something vividly imagined and experienced reality. So when a person is in trance, deeply experiencing a healing “re-do” of an experience, the subconscious mind accepts this as experienced reality. The old memory is replaced with the new experience. The conscious mind still remembers the old experience, but all the emotional power and trauma to the nervous system stored in the body is released. It can seem like magic to the person freed from the old traumatic experience.

A good, practiced hypnotherapist will help you get to the root of the problem, and release it through a healing “re-do.” There are several good hypnotherapists locally to choose from. Don’t wait.

Her adult self grabbed her up as she ran happily down the isle after performing and celebrated her victory. Today Meghan’s anxiety when performing publicly is quite manageable.
