Dr. Edna J. Carver operated Steamboat Hot Springs in Reno as a Sanitarium (or health resort) from 1919 until her death in 1954. Curiosity has been triggered as to why Steamboat was one of the famous healing spas of the first half of the 20th century, drawing clients from around the world. A statement found in Dr. Carver’s personal papers reveals her approach to healing:

A healing is more than a bringing of flesh and bone and nerve and blood to a state of soundness and regular action. Unless there is accomplished a change more fundamental than these, the seeker of health is defeated in his quest.

She was a life-long student of metaphysics, and clearly believed that a healing of spirit played an important role in healing of the body. Examination of the movement in which she participated reveals that spirituality was a common thread among the pioneers whose approach was strengthening the body so it can heal itself, rather than the treatment of disease.

Steamboat services included hydrotherapy, in both private geothermal tub rooms and indoor pools; mud wraps, massage, a geothermal steam room, a five room hotel, and a dining room, serving health food. The conditions treated included arthritis, digestive problems, liver and kidney problems and hyperacidity, along with a number of other ailments. Dr. Carver was an Osteopath and designer of the treatments offered. Although the records indicate that she had a small pharmacy, letters and statements from clients all stress use of the baths and drinking mineral water.

Dr. Carver was a student of the other major natural healing facilities of her time, and it is safe to assume her treatments follow a similar approach. The therapies of two primogenitors of this movement were well documented. First is the Sanitarium at Battle Creek Michigan. Battle Creek offered hydrotherapy, exercise, massage, salt glows, color treatments (called phototherapy) and colon therapy. Best known for teaching about diet, beginning in the late 1800’s, director Dr. John Harvey Kellogg advocated a diet low in fat and protein and high in whole grains. He was the inventor of corn flakes and authored 50 books on natural health. Dr. Carver’s papers include details on the Battle Creek diet, along with information on the dangers of aluminum pans and importance of alkalizing the system through diet. Another pioneering effort by Dr. Kellogg was to work for acceptance of massage as a therapy. His ground breaking book Art of Massage (1895) is still referenced and available today. Massage was a central therapy at Steamboat and Battle Creek.

The second seminal location was the Health Institute of Dr. Harold J. Reilly, of Rockefeller Center in New York City. Dr. Reilly was a student of Dr. Kellogg, and the holder of eight college degrees. His clinic focused on physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, massage, exercise and diet. In 1930 a client came to him with a prescription for therapy contained in a reading by the psychic Edgar Casey. The reading specified Dr. Reilly by name, indicating the therapies he offered would fulfill the suggestions from Casey. After this first contact, Dr. Reilly continued to work with the therapies described by Casey in his readings for a number of years; and the list of famous people he treated includes many public figures and entertainers. Client Bob Hope quipped “Everyone should live the life of Reilly.” Few who quote this today understand that what he meant was a good diet, exercise and frequent massage.

Today, one out of three Americans will get cancer, which is the 2nd leading cause of death in the US. You don’t have to be a statistic. Boost your immune system to help prevent illness and disease, including cancer. If you are already having health challenges, having a strong immune system will maximize your body’s healing potential.

In Part I: Don’t Be a Cancer Statistic, the importance of how to detoxify/cleanse toxins from the body, and then how to rebuild with proper diet, nutrition and supplements were discussed. Detoxification and rebuilding are both crucial to health, healing at the cell level and in building a strong immune system. Reducing toxic exposure and stress reduction are also important to assure a strong immune system for vibrant health.

REDUCE YOUR TOXIC EXPOSURE: A recent report by the Columbia University School of Public Health estimated that 95 percent of cancers are caused by diet and environmental toxicity. Studies show that there are over 287 chemicals present in a newborns’ blood with 180 of these known to cause cancer!

Here are some startling statistics:

• There are over 80,000 chemicals produced in North America

• There are over 3,000 chemicals added to our food supply.

• There are over 10,000 chemical solvents, emulsifiers and preservative used in food processing.

• There are over 1,000 new chemicals introduced each year.

Chemicals are toxic, foreign invaders to the body; they activate the immune system. The more toxins we put into the body, the harder the immune system must work. An overworked immune system eventually becomes ineffective in fighting disease and cancer. Eliminating the number of toxins that we ingest, breathe in, put on our skin or come in contact with will take stress off of the immune system. Here are some steps that can be taken to decrease your exposure to toxins.

• Water: Install water filters, both for drinking and bathing. Our water is polluted with agricultural, factory and automobile pollution chemicals, prescription and over-the counter drugs, heavy metals and human waste. All these make their way into our lakes, rivers and ground water, only to be pumped back out of the ground and be treated with more chemicals (chlorine) to purify it for safe drinking water. According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, “Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93 percent higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.” When you take a shower, you breathe in chlorine fumes and absorb it through your skin.

• Personal Care Products: Buy products made from natural ingredients, herbs and essential oils that are preservative free: Most toothpaste, deodorants, cosmetics, soap and shampoos, feminine hygiene products and hair dyes are filled with hundreds of chemical toxins and will increase your risk of cancer. Check out the ingredients of your toothpaste. You may be starting your day with a hefty dose of chemicals that go directly into your bloodstream.

• Reduce Exposure to Electromagnetic Frequencies: EMFs create changes in the body on a cellular level and can cause tumors, cancer and memory problems. Use cell phone protectors & dirty electricity blockers in your home.

• Food: Eat organic whenever possible including all meats and dairy. Avoid processed foods genetically modified and irradiated foods. In other words, buy healthy whole foods and prepare meals at home as much as possible.

• Eliminate non-stick cookware: They emit toxins from the synthetic lining and usually have aluminum as their base, which will help your Alzheimer’s along. Use stainless steel.

• Reduce/eliminate use of Microwave Ovens: Microwaves cause molecular & chemical changes in the food which is detrimental to your health. It also destroys food nutrients.

• Packaging: Carcinogenic, toxic substances are transferred from plastic, aluminum foil, aluminum cans, and Styrofoam into our food and body. Choose glass bottles, paper bags, cardboard containers and canned goods with protective enamel linings.

• Purchase environmental friendly cleaning products: Go green to get clean! Just breathing in those toxic fumes is detrimental to your health!

REDUCE EMOTIONAL & PHYSICAL STRESS: “The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.”

The saying “Stress Kills” is true; it sets in motion your “fight or flight response,” to prepare the body for action. Unfortunately, many of us are continually in this stress response mode, which eventually can have a devastating effect on your physical health.

Research has now shown, beyond any reasonable doubt, that human emotions have a direct influence on the way our cells function in our body and on our DNA! Emotions can affect your health in a positive or in a destructive way, depending on the emotion; they can cause physical imbalance and make you sick or they can make you well! The energy associated with the emotion of anger will have a very different affect on your physical body compared to the emotion of joy or gratitude.

Here are a few suggestions for reducing stress and improving physical and emotional well-being:

• So-Sound Therapy: Relaxing and healing both physically and emotionally! Lie on a So-Sound table and experience a musical massage that not only feels great, but breaks the stress cycle and changes brainwaves to a meditative state and begins to balance cell energies. Certain musical tones have been proven to repair DNA! Backed by research.

• SomatoEmotional Release: Reconnect with yourself by processing emotional or physical trauma from the central nervous system. A gentle hands-on therapy that is meditative and relaxing.

• Quantum Indigo Biofeedback: Reduces stress and re-trains the body energetically while you relax on a sound table. Balances erratic body frequencies, which occurs with emotional stress, illness, injury and can help boost the immune system. Maximizes your healing potential and promotes health and well-being.

• Massage Therapy: Relaxing and both emotionally and physically healing. Try an oncology or lymphatic massage; which reduces anxiety, improves energy stimulates the lymphatic system, improves metabolism, promotes the removal of bodily toxins and waste, and encourages a healthy immune system.

• Exercise: Exercise not only improves your physical health in many ways but also helps to reduce mental tension and stress. Exercise, even just walking, also improves lymph flow which will boost your immune system.

• Yoga: Heals and balances on all levels, physically, mentally and spiritually.

• Meditation/Prayer: Quiets the mind, relaxes and reduces stress. Settle into your heart and connect to your higher self.

• AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE!

Lee, NMD, APH |

“Natural methods of treatment are the most effective and appropriate, but avoiding disease and injury are always the wisest course”.

Naturopathic medicine is both an art and a science, practiced by physicians who are trained to understand and use principles of naturopathy to maintain or restore optimal health in their patients. These principles are taught in unique medical schools with methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. As all medical professions have embraced modern tools and procedures, naturopathic medicine extends into modern clinical sciences, devices and technologies. Naturopathy today is not limited to certain modalities and medicines, any more than other professions are limited to the resources of centuries past.

Naturopathic physicians apply six ancient principles to each patient’s unique condition. While other philosophies of health and heal

I. First Do No Harm: Primum No Nocere

Seek to utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies first. For this, naturopathy makes use of a giant tool chest of natural foods and medicines.

II. The Healing Power of Nature: Vis Mediatrix Naturae

The physician trusts in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself, and knows that the healing process is ordered and intelligent. The physician facilitates healing by removing obstacles to health and by supporting the needed nutrition and elimination to restore balance.

III. Identify and Treat the Cause: Tolle Causam

Illness does not occur without cause. Symptoms are not the cause of disease, they are its indicators. Symptoms, therefore, must not be suppressed by treatment. They may be relieved to assist comfort, but restoring health requires treatment of the underlying cause.

IV. Heal the Whole Person: Tolle Totum

Complete health includes physical, emotional, mental, environmental, spiritual, and many other complex factors. Achieving personal health goals will build success into the future of both doctor and patient.

V. The Physician as Teacher: Docere

The physician educates and encourages people to take responsibility for their own health. Teaching the principles for a healthy life is definitive for a doctor of any medical philosophy.

VI. Prevention: Preoccupo est optimus

A system of health care must first prevent or avoid disease and injury. Natural methods of treatment are the most effective and appropriate, but avoiding disease and injury are always the wisest course.

What Treatments Do Naturopathic Physicians Use?

• Herbal and Homeopathic medicines

• Clinical nutrition and dietary modifications

• Indigenous medical arts of China, India, old Europe, and early America when clinically sound

• Physical medicine such as massage, manipulation, bodywork, exercise and hydrotherapy

• Counseling, Guidance, Grieving support

• Managing or transitioning pharmaceutical use

Where to Access Modern Naturopathic Medicine

Presently there are 16 states, two territories and four Canadian provinces that license naturopathic medicine in some form. Nevada currently does not license naturopathic physicians. The Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners is proposing legislation to more accurately describe modern natural medicine, however.

Treat yourself to the best natural medical care you can find. You will be glad you did.

By Michelle Montoya

Not all lasers are created equal. There are different lasers for different cosmetic and aesthetic purposes. Some of the various procedures that use lasers are: hair reduction and removal; vascular treatments, such as spider vein removal, reducing roseacea, and other vascular lesions; wart removal; acne treatment; collagen stimulations and skin resurfacing.

Hair Removal

There are basically two main types of medical devices used for hair removal. The first is a true LASER, or Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. There are many different strengths and wavelengths of lasers. One that is often used for hair removal is the Nd:YAG, which uses 1064 nanometers of wavelength. Its primary target is hemoglobin, but it does have a small affinity for melanin (color pigment in skin).

The other popular hair removal option is an Intense Pulse Light (IPL) machine. The IPL machine primarily targets melanin. In hair removal, both medical devices target the hair and follicle in the active hair growth phase of the hair growth cycle. This is because in this stage, the hair has a root attached and when the root is attached, the area around the hair is filled with blood. The 1064 Nd:YAG attacks the blood supply and stops it, thus stopping the supply of nutrients to the follicle and it dies. The IPL machine actually heats the pigment of color in the root itself and destroys the hair follicle. Both are reliable forms of hair removal.

With hair removal, several treatments will need to be done to get rid of all hair. Two weeks after treatment, the hair disappears. Whatever hair wasn’t destroyed will grow back in four weeks. Treatments are usually six weeks apart. While side effects are rare, some may have a swollen appearance to the follicle after treatment, but it’s usually gone within minutes.

Vascular Treatments

In the land of veins and vascular lesions, the 1064 Nd:YAG is the machine of choice because it targets hemoglobin. The IPL machine works equally well on collagen stimulations, but because it targets pigment in the skin, it can burn off sun spots or sun damage. A trained and licensed person should always form your treatments, as skin could easily be burned with both machines but more so with the IPL machine.

The other choice of laser for sun spots and damage, scars, wrinkles, etc. is the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, which is losing popularity due to recovery time, the Erbium:YAG laser (which produces energy that is better absorbed by the skin that a CO2 laser, and the fractional laser. These lasers are classed as ablative lasers, which means their wavelength is such that they peel off the top layers of skin to mid-dermal level or more. These lasers are usually run by licensed professionals.

In vascular treatments, including spider vein removal, recovery time is quicker than traditional surgical methods of vein removal. The chance of complications is less, and the procedure is well-tolerated by most patients. Many of the unsightly veins can be removed with one treatment, but some may need two or more to completely clear the veins.

Wart Removal

When it comes to warts, there are several methods for removal. Keratolysis removes surface skin cells with salicylic acid, blistering agents, or formaldehyde. Cryosurgery freezes the wart with liquid nitrogen, which causes the wart and surrounding skin to fall off. Laser treatments destroy the small blood vessels that nourish the wart and keep it alive, which causes the wart to fall off.

Three types of lasers are typically used to remove warts. A pulsed dye laser (PDL), carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, or Nd:YAG laser. Nd:YAG lasers are an effective way of removing warts because they target the dilated blood vessels at the base of the wart and effectively destroy the virus and disinfecting the surrounding tissue.

In most cases, warts that are treated with lasers are permanently removed after only one treatment. Laser treatment, in contrast to surgical removal, causes no scarring and generally requires no anesthesia. This makes it particularly suitable for the treatment of children with warts.

Acne Treatment

Lasers treat acne by delivering light through the skin’s surface, triggering the body’s natural bacteria fighting defenses. These defenses kill the problem causing bacteria and reduce the severity of current and future breakouts. Fractional (or Fraxel®) lasers have the potency of ablative treatments but the gentle safety of non-ablative lasers. Fraxel® Laser treatments also trigger the body’s natural production of new collagen and skin cells, which leaves the skin looking younger and fresher.

Nd:YAG lasers are also used to treat acne and work the same way as Fraxel lasers do. They use a high power laser that penetrates the skin and targets the bacteria that produces the inflammation associated with acne. This bacteria releases molecules called porphyrins, which when exposed to a certain wavelength of light (the laser beam), increase in number until they destroy the bacteria.

With laser acne treatments, a high power laser penetrates the skin, targeting and destroying the bacteria that produce the inflammation associated with acne. The laser also gently vaporizes any scars so that undamaged skin below is revealed. Unlike many other techniques used to treat acne and scars, laser resurfacing is gentle, and complete recovery is achieved within days.

Collagen Stimulation

Unfortunately, we can’t stop time, which is why everyone gets fine lines and wrinkles. While we may not be able to stop time, we can use today’s technology to slow it down a little. As the skin gets older, the cells get thinner and are less elastic. Laser resurfacing uses a laser beam to gently vaporize a thin layer of the skin’s surface. The heat from the laser energy also stimulates the production of new collagen in the dermis. The overall

result is that new smoother and tighter skin forms.

Unlike traditional treatments such as dermabrasion (removing skin by abrasion) and chemical peels (removing the skin by using chemicals), the unique characteristics of lasers mean that your doctor can have much more accurate and precise control over the treatment, especially how deep the laser penetrates your skin. The Nd:YAG laser is commonly used in collagen stimulation and remodeling because it penetrates to the collagen layer in the skin to heat and stimulate new growth. The result is tighter skin due to new collagen.

For laser collagen remodeling, there is no immediate sign that a treatment has been done. Laser resurfacing vaporizes a thin layer of skin, and some patients describe it feeling like a sunburn or being snapped with a rubber band. Since laser collagen remodeling stimulates new collagen to grow, many treatments will be needed to maintain growth.

Laser Therapy Today

While it seems that using a laser on skin would be painful, there are many cooling treatments used to prevent any discomfort. There are four types of epidermal cooling: clear gel, contact cooling, cryogen spray, and air cooling. Air cooling is the most natural way of cooling and works by forcing freezing air to the area. The many technological advances prove that using lasers today are safe alternatives to the traditional treatments of yesterday.

The overall result is that new smoother and tighter skin forms.

There are four types of epidermal cooling: clear gel, contact cooling, cryogen spray, and air cooling. Air cooling is the most natural way of cooling and works by forcing freezing air to the area.
PART 1: General Considerations, Types of Heaters

In previous Healthy Beginnings Magazine issues, we have discussed the benefits of using a Far Infrared Sauna (FIR). So what about purchasing one for your home? One might think that all you do is go to your local sauna store and buy one. Sounds easy until you consider the details like, where am I going to place it, what kind of electrical outlet do I need, what features do I look for, and so forth. Buying a sauna can be a complex purchase given the cost and the physical logistics involved. Here is important information that will help you purchase your own FIR sauna.

Saunas come in all different sizes and shapes, including different woods, types of heaters, electronics, and construction. The #1 consideration in purchasing a sauna should be to buy a sauna that advances your health. This means a sauna that does what it is supposed to do, i.e., it produces the correct micron of FIR energy and does not emit toxins from the materials used to construct it. You will also need to consider the size of the sauna and where you want to place it in your home or office. Other considerations are the controls, size and placement of heaters and benches and amenities, e.g., a stereo sound system or DVD player. The warranty and reputation of the manufacturer should also be considered.

The heart and soul of your sauna are its heaters. There are essentially 4 types: carbon panel heaters, ceramic encased coils, metal rods, and ceramic rods coated with incoloy, a very stable base-metal protectant.

Carbon panel heaters have an advantage over the other 3 types of heater because of their large size. This allows them to distribute the infrared heat more evenly, producing a softer heat that most closely resembles a warm sunny day. Some carbon panel heaters are merely carbon paper glued to a metal board and will peal away with extended use. Other saunas use carbon placed in front of steel rod heaters. The most efficient design is a layer of carbon paste baked between two sections of a circuit board, with a thin copper wire up the length of each side of the heater.

When completely baked, it is a solid panel rather than a multi-layered. Carbon is what conducts the electricity across the surface area of the panel, creating the FIR energy. A good carbon panel heater should not be hot enough to cause burns when touched by the body. These are the most complex heaters and cost more to manufacture.

Ceramic encased coil heaters are much smaller than carbon panel heaters, producing much more heat per square inch of heating surface, making them much hotter than carbon panels. Ceramic heaters may cause burns if touched. They are often shielded by aluminum grates which also get hot enough to cause burns if touched. In addition, due to their size, the heat is much harsher; thus the time it takes for the sauna to heat up can be relatively longer than other heaters. These heaters are less expensive to make, keeping the price of the sauna a bit lower.

Metal rod heaters are similar in design and construction to those in an electric oven. Whether they produce the correct micron of FIR energy is questionable since there has been no known testing of them. Some manufacturers spray-coat metal rods with a carbon-based substance supposed to increase the likelihood that the correct micron of FIR energy is produced. Metal rods do get hot enough to burn when touched and heat the sauna very quickly. This type of heater it is rather inexpensive to manufacture, which keeps the cost of the sauna down.

Ceramic rods coated with incoloy appear similar to metal rod heaters but are much different. Incoloy is a metal alloy (a mixture of metals, e.g., copper, iron and other). The coating helps distribute the heat more evenly in conjunction with the heater housing (the metal box that holds the heater). This produces a somewhat softer heat than ceramic-encased heaters and the plain metal rods, but not as soft as carbon panel heaters. Incoloy heaters heat up quickly, and are often more expensive to manufacture than the other 3 heaters.

Placement of heaters inside the sauna is very important. Being surrounded by as many heaters as possible is the goal. Most saunas have heaters on the front and back walls. Even more desirable is to have heaters on both side-walls and the floor. Floor heaters are important because a large amount of toxins are expelled through the feet when they are sufficiently warmed. Saunas without floor heaters are usually much cooler in the floor area. As the heat rises, cold air circulates in the bottom of the sauna. Side-wall heaters are a bonus because when you stretch out lengthwise, you can treat your spine and feet to FIR energy. The larger and wider carbon panel heaters distribute the heat safely and evenly. Other heaters tend to concentrate the FIR energy only in the small narrow area directly in front of the heater.

Part 2 will cover types of wood and other construction issues, concerns about electromagnetic frequencies (EMF), warranties, dealers, manufacturers and good questions to get answers to before you buy.

What is a Saline System?

A Saline (salt-water) purification system for your pool provides on-site production of a sanitizer necessary to maintain safe, healthy and algae-free water. It involves no handling, storage or adding of chemicals to the water. When properly sized for its application, it eliminates the need to purchase sanitizing chemicals.

How does this system work?

Using every day table salt (sodium chloride) that dissolves into water, the water is subjected to a simple process of electrolysis and a very effective water sanitizer is produced. When the water and salt is passed through the cell portion of the Saline System equipment, chlorine gas is automatically produced. The chlorine gas dissolves instantaneously into the water (so is never a hazard), and produces high levels of sanitizer/oxidizer, preventing the formation of ‘chloramines’ and other chlorine compounds and provides a safe and measurable amount of sanitizer.

How salty is the water?

In fresh-water applications, the salt produces a salinity of approx 3000 ppm (parts-per-million), which is 1/12th as salty as ocean water, or 1/3rd as salty as human tears. Pool-side plants and water-feature vegetation, in almost all cases, are unaffected by the low salinity water.

Benefits?

• Healthy. This system will maintain healthy water while eliminating the risks and problems associated with periods of very high or low chemical levels.

• Prevents algae growth. The constant ‘shocking’ of the water as it passes through the Saline System ‘cell’ together with consistently maintained sanitizer levels in the main water body will prevent the growth of all common algae.

• Environmentally and Ecologically Positive. The Saline System eliminates the need to manufacture, transport and store ‘pool-chlorine’ type chemicals and instead uses only pure, natural salt from the ocean – and then re-cycles that salt indefinitely!

Improving your skin’s appearance can be counted as one of the many health benefits associated with the regular use of a far infrared (FIR) sauna. Healthy skin is essential to overall health. This is because the skin is the largest eliminatory organ of the body. The skin is sometimes referred to as the “third kidney.” The deep sweating that is produced during a FIR sauna session brings deeply imbedded impurities and dead skin cells to the surface of the skin which make the skin immaculately clean and radiant. Your face will glow after a FIR sauna session from the increased circulation that comes from using a sauna. Many people find that their skin tone and elasticity can improve and skin problems such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis can benefit greatly from the use of a FIR sauna.

Even keloid scars can be softened and become less visible. In addition, many women have noticed that cellulite is reduced when they regularly use a FIR sauna.

So why is sweating through the use of a FIR sauna so much more beneficial for the skin than normal sweating such as through exercise or taking a hot bath? The answer lies in the nature of the sweat produced by a FIR sauna. It has been medically proven many times that sweat from a FIR sauna session contains, on average, eight times more toxins than sweat achieved from exercise or traditional sauna use, such as a steam bath or wet sauna. Dr. Toshiko Yamazaki, MD, who owns a far infrared therapy clinic in Japan and wrote The

Science of Far Infrared Therapies, has observed that many patients are cured of chronic acne with regular use of a FIR sauna. Dr. Yamazaki compares humans to bio-accumulators, and as such, they store numerous toxins in the body. Toxins disrupt the body’s natural healing processes. Some of these toxins are trapped in the skin and the fatty tissue just below the skin’s surface, causing acne and other skin problems. Sweating from using a FIR sauna removes these toxins from the skin. This not only makes the skin healthier but also makes the entire body healthier from the reduction in toxins. The healthier you are the healthier your skin will appear.

Your skin will feel wonderfully soft and clean after a sauna session. This is possible even though no water is used in a FIR sauna because the skin will be moisturized from within. It is important to drink plenty of water during and after your sauna session. A healthy, well balanced diet is also important so the body will have the correct balance of minerals and oils to keep the skin soft and moist naturally in conjunction with sauna therapy. The body’s natural oils are drawn from inside the body to the surface of the skin. Dead skin is exfoliated away. Even those with dry skin can benefit from the use of a FIR sauna.

The use of a FIR sauna may aid in removing cellulite. Cellulite is made up of fat, water, and waste that is trapped in pockets underneath the skin in the stomach, pelvic, and thigh areas of the body. Cellulite usually affects only women. Saunaing helps to reduce cellulite because it removes the water and waste which comprise cellulite.

In addition, body fat is reduced because saunaing increases the metabolic process, which in turn burns calories. Studies have shown a 30 minute far infrared sauna session can burn between 200-600 calories. Therefore, along with exercise and a low fat diet the regular use of a FIR sauna can reduce cellulite. You may want to consider adding a massage before your sauna session. This can accelerate the reduction in cellulite. Reno massage therapist Lisa Metzger states that many women can benefit from a massage before a sauna session because it helps breakup the toxins that are trapped in the pockets of fat.

Another advantage of using a FIR sauna is a reduction in the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Those with keloid scars can especially benefit from saunaing. Japanese researchers have also observed that scars fade with regular use of a FIR sauna over time; in some individuals the scars become virtually undetectable. This is because regular use of a FIR sauna softens the skin and allows for increased circulation and blood flow to the scar tissue. The blood brings nutrients to the affected area which aids in healing the scarred tissue.

By Peter Zulim

Far infrared (FIR) saunas are well known for their excellent detoxification and pain relieving capabilities. Perhaps just as intriguing, Far Infrared saunas also offer a healthy weight loss solution without exercising! Yes, it’s true. Weight loss is another of the many benefits of regular use of far infrared saunas. This is great news, as a lot of us tend to overeat during the holidays and put on weight. Moreover a lot of us find it hard to get out and exercise in the cold winter months. So imagine relaxing in a warm far infrared sauna while the holiday pounds metaphorically melt away.

Weight loss is accomplished through the use of a far infrared sauna by speeding up the metabolic process of vital organs and endocrine glands which results in a substantial caloric loss during the sauna session. Studies have shown that a 30 minute far infrared sauna session can burn from 200 to 600 calories.

As the body works to cool itself during FIR sauna use, there is a substantial and beneficial increase in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate. Similarly, studies conducted on whole body hyperthermia have shown that blood flow may rise from 5-7 quarts per minute (normal) to as much as 13 quarts per minute. That’s a good workout!

A moderately fit person may sweat as much as one pound of sweat in a 30 minute far infrared sauna session, equivalent to running 2-3 miles. While it is true that the weight of the water expelled in the sauna may be regained by rehydrating with water, the calories burned up during a far infrared sauna session are real and do contribute to weight loss. Therefore, it is not water loss that causes the loss in weight. The weight loss is from an increase in calories burned due to an increase in the metabolic processes.

When dieting, fasting and/or burning fat, toxins such as PCBs, pesticides, and heavy metals stored in fat tissue are released, sometimes causing intense headaches. Saunas can rapidly help to remove these toxins and to relieve headaches. As skin temperature increases, the layer of fat and oil found just below the surface of the skin liquefies and moves out through the skin’s sweat glands, taking the toxins with it to the surface of your skin. Following a good shower, the body’s toxic load is reduced.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that obesity is the leading and key cause of many serious health problems, including heart attack, diabetes, and stroke. In such cases, a sauna can provide double benefits by aiding in weight loss, and delivering other health and restorative benefits. Repeated far infrared sauna use has been shown to improve blood vessel function in patients with high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Thus saunas may play a preventative role in our good health, as well as reverse damage caused by obesity.

Accessing far infrared saunas is easy today. The most convenient way, of course, is to purchase one for your home. However, another alternative is to purchase a sauna membership or sessions from a far infrared sauna shop. Keep in mind, however that the benefits discussed above are achieved by using far infrared saunas — not all saunas produce the same results. So when shopping for a sauna or a sauna membership please be sure to investigate whether the sauna you are looking at actually produces far infrared heat.

NOTE: It is advisable that anyone with a heart condition, who uses blood thinners, or who may be pregnant, consult with their healthcare advisor before using a far infrared sauna.

In addition, when using a far infrared sauna, it is important to remain hydrated by taking in fluids during and after your sauna session.

Have you ever wondered about body wraps? What are you actually wrapped in and how it is done? Here are some basic fundamentals about wraps: the different kinds, what works and what doesn’t, and what to look for so that you get maximum benefits.

One of the most important things to determine is how oils are used in wraps. Many facilities use oils on the skin prior to the wrap to “make the skin moist and hydrated”. The problem with this approach is that the oil acts as a barrier, so the skin cannot absorb any of the mineral or herbal properties of the wrap itself. Any benefit from the medicinal properties of the herbs and minerals is basically negated.

Therefore, when looking for a good body wrap, the first thing to notice is if they tell you not to use lotion or oils before your wrap, because they want your body to absorb the minerals. Additionally, your body needs to be hydrated in order to remove the toxins via the kidneys. Some spas may offer alkalizing mineral rich water for you to drink during the process to keep you hydrated throughout.

Mud is often a primary ingredient in body wraps. It has been used as a body cleansing agent for literally thousands of years by many cultures. Certain aboriginal cultures “bury” people in mud and dirt to cleanse them and remove body odor. Many wraps today use exotic muds such as Dead Sea mud or special mineral muds, to pull toxins from the body — but the action can also be extremely drying. (Think about your hands after working in your garden with no gloves on!) That is one reason why facilities use oils on the body after the wrap.

Sea weed wraps are another good wrap option, providing they contain no oils. Sea weed provide many ionic minerals that are very beneficial to your skin and body. However, your body will continue to absorb these minerals only as long as the wrap is on you.

An herbal rub combines aromatherapy and massage. The herbs adhere to the skin by using coconut or other oil. Therefore, because of the oil barrier, aromatherapy is the principal benefit.

The key to radiant good health is keeping the body mineralized and alkalized. When a body wrap brings you back to this state, your body can rid itself of metabolic waste and reach a healthy balance. That is why your skin is soft, supple and hydrated after beneficial wraps. This is not due to oils; it is due to the minerals enhancing and stimulating the skin’s natural

lubricating ability.

In addition, when the body is more mineralized, it releases the waste that makes it feel sluggish. You will feel revitalized after an effective wrap, and sleep well that evening as the body uses this cleansing opportunity to heal itself during sleep.

Body wraps run in the range of $90 to $150; each type will make you feel better and enjoy better looking skin.

There is, however, one wrap to be careful of — a dehydration or compression wrap, designed to make you “lose inches.” Dehydrating products are placed on the body and you are wrapped in ace bandages and plastic. Then you go into a sauna to sweat. Water is not offered during this wrap, which encourages the body to give up water, thereby shrinking tissues and reducing overall body fluids/hydration. The possibility of heat stroke or kidney failure is very high during such an unhealthy process. Moreover, as soon as you drink fluids, the body returns to its original condition (size). You may wish to avoid dehydration wraps because of the possible harm to your system.

Where do you find a good massage practitioner? What are the choices in the Reno area, and what are the benefits of each?

At a massage school you pay far less than at other places. Usually it’s about half the going professional rate. This can be good for your pocketbook and there are other benefits as well. You can find a student whose style you particularly like and train her to your specific needs. Then you can follow her as she becomes a professional.

Going to a school for a massage also means that you most likely won’t have to wait long for your massage. In some schools you can walk in and get worked on right away.

Maybe you’d like to try a massage center. The therapists in this setting are more experienced than students but many are just starting out and need a place to gain experience before they hang their own shingles. You can find someone you really like and request him every time or take the next available person if you are in a hurry. This is a great place for gift certificates; for a favorite teacher of one of your kids or a service professional whose work you liked or a close friend who needs a pick-me-up.

Another great place to receive a massage is a hair/beauty salon. Many salons are putting massage in their locations because such modalities go together well. There is a lot to be said for getting your hair done and getting your massage in the same place, sometimes on the same day. A problem with this type of location is that the smell of perm and nail solutions often travels into the massage rooms. Noise can also be a big factor. Some places are closing off the massage area from the hair salon to avoid this.

Often when traveling, people go to hotel spas for their massages. These spas typically hire workers on salary and work them long hours. Often the therapists have to conserve their energy for long days so they don’t do the depth or breadth of work that you can find in private places. However, there are some therapists who love that kind of environment and will give you great body work. Also, if your therapist becomes ill there is generally someone to fill in and you don’t have to forego your session. You can ask other guests and the staff to find out who may be a preferred therapist.

Casinos and hotels are more restrictive in their requirements for timing so you may only get a 50 minute massage instead of a full hour. Their prices are very inflated compared to private practitioners. However, the environment is typically lovely and caters to the customer so service is generally good. The main advantage to hotel spas is that you don’t have to go through the phone book and look for someone and wonder about who you’re getting. The practitioner is provided by the hotel and is qualified and available.

As massage is accepted as a viable health care modality and as more people find relaxation and relief from pain and tension through massage, more massage therapists are becoming independent and finding their own clients. The best way to find a good private massage therapist is to ask friends and fellow workers for recommendations. As you collect these names and suggestions from people or from signage you can call and interview the practitioners to find out what they do that is special and how long they have been in business and how much they love what they do. As you look for a good therapist you will find that cost is not the most important thing. If there is a huge variance in cost, that bears looking into, but most people in an area are about the same price. You need someone for a specific problem; price becomes less of a factor in picking the right person. Gender also does not need to be a factor. Most people prefer women but there are excellent men in the field. And since most people do prefer women, becoming a successful male therapist is more challenging. When you find a man who is successful, he definitely warrants consideration.

Health and Wellness Spas are popping up all over the country as our attention moves to longevity and more natural health. We are taking care of ourselves without doctors and prescription drugs. Many spas of this kind are in our area and most offer massage as one of the several modalities.

There is a big variance in cost of massage from spa to spa. Generally the therapists chosen for work in places like this have to apply and fulfill professional and skill requirements to be considered. Therefore you are more assured of getting quality work there than in other places.

Last but not least is the option of having someone come to your home. There are many massage therapists who do “outcall massage”. It usually costs quite a bit more due to extra time for travel and gas usage. However, the luxury of having someone come to your home to work out your kinks and stresses and leave you to your hot tub, bed or a relaxing evening is beyond words.

Receiving a massage is a very personal thing. There is often a close connection between the therapist and the client because of the nature of the work. Human beings thrive on touch and on close connections. Receiving a massage can often disarm tension or anger and frustration from the day or week. Where it is done is also a personal matter. Each receiver has a different set of needs and qualities that will prescribe the type of location and surroundings for the best experience. If you don’t get what you were hoping for at one place, then by all means, try another. It is worth the search to find the right person and the right location.

You can find most of the massage venues discussed in this article in the phone book yellow pages under Massage, Therapeutic. Some entries have ads, some displays do not. The ads may describe the type of work available but word of mouth and personal interviews with individual practitioners will provide you with the best information and the best results.

Combining the benefits of cleansing, weight loss and a relaxing vacation getaway has serious appeal to stressed-out, busy people and their families. Fortunately, the global travel industry has been responsive to the idea, and there are many wonderful resorts around the world to satisfy nearly any need health/travel need. Spa Resorts are as close at hand as David Walley’s Resort Hot Springs in Genoa, Nevada, or as far away as Thailand or Tahiti.

Whether you choose to stay close to home or to venture out to a warm exotic climate you should start by detoxing your body. You can eliminate the toxins which accumulate in your tissues and bloodstream coming from your food and drink, the toxic environment, and the pollutants we are exposed to everyday. This can be done at a spa through a combination of massage, sauna, oils, mild fasting, and colon therapy. Immediate benefits are MORE ENERGY (www.Detox.org)! The body is expending energy trying to eliminate the chemical and toxins we take in on a daily basis. By ridding your body of these toxins you will have more energy to do the activities that are enjoyable to you.

The long term benefits of proper detoxification include:

• more energy

• fewer allergies

• stronger immunity

• fewer aches & pains

• naturally healthier skin & hair

• a healthier you!

When toxins build up faster than you can eliminate them, your body makes new fat just to store the toxins. This is done to protect your organs from the toxins and to store them as far away from your vital organs as possible. This is a huge reason to detox. Who wants that excess fat, full of toxins, under their chin or arms, or worse around their middle or hips?

When looking for a great Spa Resort, look for someplace that will meet your goals. What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want to go to focus on diet, physical activity, detoxification, colon cleansing, relaxation, or pampering? Many resorts offer some or all of these. You can find all the details on dozens of types of spa vacations, themes, and the amenities provided by each, using Google or another online search engine. Most spas offer week-long packages that provide meals, activities and accommodations. You can even get airfare included at a discounted rate!

A world renowned spa is located right next door in California. Some of you may have heard of it. The Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, California, located within La Costa Resort and Spa. It is a relatively short drive from the Reno area or better yet, fly into San Diego and relieve yourself of the stress of driving to Southern California. The Center sits along the coastal foothills of Carlsbad, California. Here you will find luxurious, relaxed and informal accommodations with amenities that include 2 championship golf courses, tennis courts and athletic facilities. There are various spiritual, healing, and yogic programs offered, many taught by Dr. Chopra himself.

If you would rather venture to an exotic, warm locale, try the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, Chiang Mai in Thailand. It features majestic architecture modeled after the opulent palaces of northern Thailand. The Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi is a destination in itself. Ranging from a shopping arcade to a culinary academy to the Lanna Kids Club, this is a luxury locale from which you can explore nearby sites of historical and cultural interests, and enjoy the benefits of the health enhancing-spa. The Dheva Spa combines exotic pampering services with traditional ayurvedic health enhancement and other holistic offerings.

The Dheva Spa features an ornate seven-tiered teakwood roof symbolizing the seven steps along the path to nirvana in Buddhist philosophy. Picture yourself among the teakwood buildings, meandering walkways and rice paddies surrounding your own villa. Lavish in the spa’s unique “Signature Ceremonies.” Each ceremony begins with a welcoming foot ritual and includes an herbal scrub, herbal steam bath, body wrap, and 80-minute massage. If an amazing “over the top” luxury spa experience in an exotic location is for you, the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi is one of the best.

Close to home or exotic destination, there is a Spa Resort that can meet your needs. Let your imagination carry you away or head out for a weekend to reenergize for another bout with the sharks. Healthy travel venues abound!

What is a key factor in organic style and skincare? Hint: It goes beyond avoiding toxic chemicals in our daily routine products. Always keep in mind Plant-derived products are fundamental to healthy skin and a naturally beautiful appearance.

For more than two decades, Aveda has worked to expand the boundaries of beauty and business, developing extraordinary products made from plants while creating a company with a conscience. Aveda takes an ethical approach to business: by aiming to create products that make intelligent use of the planet’s resources, supporting the rights of indigenous peoples and does not conduct animal testing. In partnering with Aveda these policies make good sense financially, environmentally and morally.

The root of Aveda’s holistic salon spa philosophy is of the five elements: air, fire, earth, water and space. This Ayurvedic approach considers our mind, our body and our spirit, and helps us assess what we require on all levels in order to be in balance, making it a fully integrated wellness system. By starting from the inside we can create a series of nurturing practices that will enhance our daily beauty rituals. Remember no matter how busy and hectic our worlds can be, by maintaining our positive habits we can achieve healthy, glowing skin by using gentle products, by being as peaceful as we can be, and by getting in touch with our own individual beauty and style.

Taking care of our skin is a combination of nurturance and defense. We must feed and clean our skin, but we must also protect it from harmful things in the environment, including the sun and free radicals, which are ions derived from ultraviolet rays and pollution that break down the skin’s natural supply of collagen and elastin. Additionally the mineral content in our water, low humidity and the elevation increases the need for us to take steps to counteract those effects. Cleansing, toning and moisturizing are three steps that should be done daily to promote the overall health of skin.

Salon treatments with professional strength products will enhance your personal daily skin care routine. Seek out a salon professional that will create personalized treatments for your skin type and self-care rituals based on your Ayurvedic Doshas to help bring you back to balance.
