Siobhan Fitz, Reiki Practitioner Silver Sage Healing |

As alternative healing gains more attention in society, new studies have begun to validate the effectiveness of Reiki, and many people are curious about how it works, its effectiveness, and how it fits into their religious views. Recently, on the “The Dr. Oz Show,” Dr. Mehmet Oz interviewed Reiki Master Pamela Miles, and hosted a demonstration of Reiki healing. During his interview, Dr. Oz stated that Reiki was his “favorite alternative treatment that could change the future of medicine forever” and Reiki was the number one “Oz’s order.” Dr. Oz, whose wife Lisa is a Reiki master, invited an audience member to have a brief Reiki healing. The audience member reported that after a few minutes of Reiki, her headache was relieved.

That experience is just one of a growing number of reports indicating that Reiki has medical significance. A 2008 survey indicated that 15 percent of U.S. hospitals offered Reiki as a part of their routine patient services. This number is sure to grow as Reiki gains more and more acceptance in both the medical and religious arenas, even becoming listed in a nursing “scope and standards of practice” publication on patient care. Hartford Hospital in Connecticut reported that patients who received Reiki experienced pain reduction by 78 percent, and patient sleep was improved by 86 percent.

Julie Motz, a Reiki healer who works with Dr. Mehmet Oz at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, assisted during both open heart surgery and transplants. She reports that none of her patients treated thus far have experienced post-operative depression; all have reported a reduction in pain; and among transplant patients, none in her care have experienced organ rejection.

Even more astounding is a study conducted on the immune system in Portland, Oregon. Volunteers were divided into three groups, one received Reiki treatment, another received relaxation, and the third received nothing. Blood was drawn from participants before and after treatment. The study showed that the Reiki group received an immune enhancement by way of an increase of white blood cells after the treatment. Another study found that patients who received Reiki experienced a lower diastolic blood pressure. These exciting studies are opening the door for us to learn more about what Reiki can offer to the medical community, and its benefits on our bodies and immune systems.

Often, patients wonder about the religious aspects of Reiki. Reiki is a system of healing based off of Eastern energy principles–the universal life energy is all around us and is channeled through the practitioner to the client. The client’s spirit is healed, and when the spirit is healed it will cause the body and mind to be healed as well. The focus of Reiki is on the seven chakras, or subtle energy transformers along the body, through which life energy flows. This life energy is called “ki,” pronounced “Chi.” This concept of universal life energy is present throughout almost all different cultures and religions, it is known as “Qudra” in Islam, “Prana” in Sanskrit and “Mana” in Polynesian. Energy healing techniques are common around the world, and are mentioned in ancient holy texts. In Christianity, the apostle Paul speaks of healing in I Corinthians 12:4-12, as well as 12:28-31, in which he speaks of spiritual gifts including the ability to heal, and people having different roles in the church, as teachers and healers. In Islam, the seven points, which are referred to as the Chakras, are called the “lata’if,” and an Islamic form of energy healing similar to Reiki has developed called Reiki Sufi, in which the practitioner calls on Allah and uses verses from the Quran. In Israel, a healing technique called “Shefa” is practiced, which is similar to Reiki as well, but uses Hebrew Prayers.

The practice of Reiki, as taught by founder Usui Makao, however, is not at all religious in nature, but rather spiritual. Techniques for energy healing used in Reiki have been used for thousands of years; with over centuries of use, these techniques became closely guarded, reserved only for the religious and societal elite. Reiki as we widely know today was re-discovered nearly one hundred years ago, by Usui Mikao in Japan. Dr. Usui was a Buddhist monk in Japan. He was well-educated and traveled, studying history, medical science, psychology and the canons of Christianity and Buddhism. After traveling to China and Europe, Dr. Usui returned to the monastery at Mt. Kurama in Japan, where he discovered using the techniques of energy healing without depleting one’s own energy. In short, letting the energy of the universe flow through you like a conduit, rather than storing and using your own energy. Reiki itself is religiously neutral, in that it doesn’t call upon the power of any specific deity. Usui’s belief was that practitioners should be able to treat all people equally, and that every person should be able to share in these techniques. Because Reiki is spiritual in nature, love and compassion are an important part of its practice. Its nature is compatible with many religious beliefs, including Christianity, Judaism, Muslim and Hinduism. Thanks to what Usui called “the wonderful gift,” people of all faiths have begun healing, as well as practicing his technique. Reiki practitioners and clients are found in a vast variety of cultural, religious and medical backgrounds.

American medical practices are, for the most part, pretty black and white. Get sick–get examined–get medicated. Eastern medicine takes a slightly different approach, looking at a person holistically and taking other factors into consideration, such as emotional stress and energy blockage. But just because this holistic gray area is often overlooked in our medical practices, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a look of our own. Reiki is an excellent example of how to get the best of both worlds.

“Fundamentally, what Reiki does is it creates balance in the body,” says Teresa Aramini, Reiki Practitioner of Reno Tahoe Reiki. “Once the body starts to get calm, relaxed and balanced, then the healing starts to occur.” Reiki targets the same Chakras and meridian lines as acupuncture; the main difference is that hands are used instead of needles. “As the hands go on these parts of the body, the energy starts to move,” Aramini says. “Most people literally start to feel the movement of energy in their body.”

Physiologically, Reiki causes the parasympathetic nervous system to start secreting hormones and enzymes, such as serotonin, which allow the body to relax. “When we get into that state we have our own pharmacy in our body that kicks in and things start to heal,” Aramini explains. “That’s why Reiki works so effectively. It’s really relying on the wisdom of the body, instead of forcing the body to do something it’s not wanting to do.” Medicine, while often effective, is a practice of forcing the body against its impulses.

“There’s certainly a place where western medicine comes into play and is absolutely important,” Aramini asserts. “Somebody who has a physical ailment that a drug will help them with should certainly be taking it.” But she wants to emphasize that there are other options, like Reiki, to utilize as well. “Not everybody wants to have to take another pill,” she says. “And Reiki will not interfere with any medications for treatments that are being prescribed by a physician.”

In November, 2009, Aramini was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Two close friends of hers recommended she try Reiki. “I went to my first Reiki treatment completely in a place of fear, beside myself, afraid that I might not live…and I experienced the most comfort and relaxation from it!” She began practicing it on herself throughout her cancer treatment, and has been doing it ever since. Now, cancer-free, she says, “It’s really changed my life.”

While this may not be the case for everyone, Aramini can tell you one thing about her patients: “When they’re finished, they do have a sense of well-being. They do feel relaxed and calm,” she says. “I don’t think most people leave their doctors’ offices with that sensation at all.”

Reiki works for people of all ages, even children, but they don’t need as much work. “Generally, children deal with their issues right away,” Aramini says. “It’s not uncommon if a kid has their feelings hurt and starts crying right away. As adults we don’t do that. We hold that stuff in and that creates energy blocks.” Once a mother brought her little boy in for treatment; he was very rambunctious. “Within five minutes he started to stop fidgeting and lie there calmly,” says Aramini. After the 10-minute session he asked: “Do you ever just take naps in here? I feel really relaxed!” His mother, in shock, responds to Aramini, “He hates naps…”

Children may take to Reiki more naturally than adults because they don’t really question it and just go with the flow; an open mind is essential for a true Reiki experience. “It’s not for everybody,” says Aramini. “It’s not my goal to change anybody’s opinion. I hope that I can help people the way I’ve been helped. It’s changed my life and I want to show people that it can maybe change their lives as well.”

If you’re still not convinced, Aramini offers a 10-for-10 deal: $10 for a 10-minute session. To schedule an appointment call TrésImage Salon at (775) 323-1414, or visit online at renotahoereiki.com.

Did you know that the skin is your body’s largest organ? The skin is responsible for ¼ of the body’s detoxification, and eliminates up to two pounds of waste acids daily. Dry skin brushing is a powerful technique to help our skin perform these and many more important functions. Even better, it’s inexpensive and enjoyable. In less than 10 minutes daily, you can improve you health and the condition of your skin, right at home!

The basic thought behind skin brushing is to brush dry skin, in order to boost circulation and remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin so that it may more effectively remove toxins from the body. Dry skin brushing is considered to be the most effective natural lymphatic cleanser available. Lymph fluid delivers nutrients to cells and carries waste away from cells. Unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart to pump blood and the digestive tract, which uses peristaltic action (contractions) to move waste; the lymphatic system relies on outside forces such as good circulation, bodily movement and effective breathing to properly function. Due to our sedentary lifestyles and poor diets, many people have sluggish lymphatic systems and don’t even know it.

The process of skin brushing is easy and enjoyable. Beginning with the soles of the feet and working in circular and stroking motions, the object is to move lymphatic fluids toward the heart region. The majority of lymphatic matter in the body drains into the thoracic duct, which is located near the heart. After working the lower part of the body toward this region, the process is repeated on the top half of the body by lifting the arms above the head and beginning with the palms of the hands, this time working down toward the heart area. Skin brushing is done with a dry brush and dry skin, prior to daily bathing. The entire body should be brushed in the process and although firm and vigorous motions should be used, the body should feel stimulated, not sanded, afterward.

Following a skin brushing session with a hot bath adding essential oils, powdered ginger or Epsom salts and baking soda is a wonderful way to rejuvenate the body.

The skin brush should be made of all natural materials and should be washed frequently and dried in natural sunlight. A good quality skin brush should last a couple of months or more with regular care and use. It is important when choosing a skin brush to pick one with bristles that are not too stiff, so that the skin will be stimulated but not overworked.

Having a properly functioning lymphatic system not only improves your health at a cellular level, but also improves your appearance. With regular skin brushing, people report that the skin takes on a natural glow and healthy appearance. People also report that their skin feels more hydrated and that they use less lotions that they did before which makes sense since the oil glands will be free from debris and able to lubricate the skin more effectively. It is also noted that skin brushing improves cellulite, which is in part a buildup of toxins in the blood that would be normally removed by a well functioning lymphatic system.

Dry skin brushing is considered to be an essential part of any intestinal cleansing program. By improving the ability of the skin to release toxins and improving lymphatic flow, skin brushing promotes the release of toxins in other areas of the body and enhances the effectiveness of Colon Hydrotherapy. It is even reported to cleanse mucoid deposits from cells directly into the colon.

With all these benefits, and the little amount of time and money needed to invest in this process, dry skin brushing may be one of the most effective detoxification processes available to us, and you can do it at home! Why not start a skin brushing ritual today?

Today, one out of three Americans will get cancer, which is the 2nd leading cause of death in the US. You don’t have to be a statistic. Boost your immune system to help prevent illness and disease, including cancer. If you are already having health challenges, having a strong immune system will maximize your body’s healing potential.

In Part I: Don’t Be a Cancer Statistic, the importance of how to detoxify/cleanse toxins from the body, and then how to rebuild with proper diet, nutrition and supplements were discussed. Detoxification and rebuilding are both crucial to health, healing at the cell level and in building a strong immune system. Reducing toxic exposure and stress reduction are also important to assure a strong immune system for vibrant health.

REDUCE YOUR TOXIC EXPOSURE: A recent report by the Columbia University School of Public Health estimated that 95 percent of cancers are caused by diet and environmental toxicity. Studies show that there are over 287 chemicals present in a newborns’ blood with 180 of these known to cause cancer!

Here are some startling statistics:

• There are over 80,000 chemicals produced in North America

• There are over 3,000 chemicals added to our food supply.

• There are over 10,000 chemical solvents, emulsifiers and preservative used in food processing.

• There are over 1,000 new chemicals introduced each year.

Chemicals are toxic, foreign invaders to the body; they activate the immune system. The more toxins we put into the body, the harder the immune system must work. An overworked immune system eventually becomes ineffective in fighting disease and cancer. Eliminating the number of toxins that we ingest, breathe in, put on our skin or come in contact with will take stress off of the immune system. Here are some steps that can be taken to decrease your exposure to toxins.

• Water: Install water filters, both for drinking and bathing. Our water is polluted with agricultural, factory and automobile pollution chemicals, prescription and over-the counter drugs, heavy metals and human waste. All these make their way into our lakes, rivers and ground water, only to be pumped back out of the ground and be treated with more chemicals (chlorine) to purify it for safe drinking water. According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, “Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93 percent higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.” When you take a shower, you breathe in chlorine fumes and absorb it through your skin.

• Personal Care Products: Buy products made from natural ingredients, herbs and essential oils that are preservative free: Most toothpaste, deodorants, cosmetics, soap and shampoos, feminine hygiene products and hair dyes are filled with hundreds of chemical toxins and will increase your risk of cancer. Check out the ingredients of your toothpaste. You may be starting your day with a hefty dose of chemicals that go directly into your bloodstream.

• Reduce Exposure to Electromagnetic Frequencies: EMFs create changes in the body on a cellular level and can cause tumors, cancer and memory problems. Use cell phone protectors & dirty electricity blockers in your home.

• Food: Eat organic whenever possible including all meats and dairy. Avoid processed foods genetically modified and irradiated foods. In other words, buy healthy whole foods and prepare meals at home as much as possible.

• Eliminate non-stick cookware: They emit toxins from the synthetic lining and usually have aluminum as their base, which will help your Alzheimer’s along. Use stainless steel.

• Reduce/eliminate use of Microwave Ovens: Microwaves cause molecular & chemical changes in the food which is detrimental to your health. It also destroys food nutrients.

• Packaging: Carcinogenic, toxic substances are transferred from plastic, aluminum foil, aluminum cans, and Styrofoam into our food and body. Choose glass bottles, paper bags, cardboard containers and canned goods with protective enamel linings.

• Purchase environmental friendly cleaning products: Go green to get clean! Just breathing in those toxic fumes is detrimental to your health!

REDUCE EMOTIONAL & PHYSICAL STRESS: “The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.”

The saying “Stress Kills” is true; it sets in motion your “fight or flight response,” to prepare the body for action. Unfortunately, many of us are continually in this stress response mode, which eventually can have a devastating effect on your physical health.

Research has now shown, beyond any reasonable doubt, that human emotions have a direct influence on the way our cells function in our body and on our DNA! Emotions can affect your health in a positive or in a destructive way, depending on the emotion; they can cause physical imbalance and make you sick or they can make you well! The energy associated with the emotion of anger will have a very different affect on your physical body compared to the emotion of joy or gratitude.

Here are a few suggestions for reducing stress and improving physical and emotional well-being:

• So-Sound Therapy: Relaxing and healing both physically and emotionally! Lie on a So-Sound table and experience a musical massage that not only feels great, but breaks the stress cycle and changes brainwaves to a meditative state and begins to balance cell energies. Certain musical tones have been proven to repair DNA! Backed by research.

• SomatoEmotional Release: Reconnect with yourself by processing emotional or physical trauma from the central nervous system. A gentle hands-on therapy that is meditative and relaxing.

• Quantum Indigo Biofeedback: Reduces stress and re-trains the body energetically while you relax on a sound table. Balances erratic body frequencies, which occurs with emotional stress, illness, injury and can help boost the immune system. Maximizes your healing potential and promotes health and well-being.

• Massage Therapy: Relaxing and both emotionally and physically healing. Try an oncology or lymphatic massage; which reduces anxiety, improves energy stimulates the lymphatic system, improves metabolism, promotes the removal of bodily toxins and waste, and encourages a healthy immune system.

• Exercise: Exercise not only improves your physical health in many ways but also helps to reduce mental tension and stress. Exercise, even just walking, also improves lymph flow which will boost your immune system.

• Yoga: Heals and balances on all levels, physically, mentally and spiritually.

• Meditation/Prayer: Quiets the mind, relaxes and reduces stress. Settle into your heart and connect to your higher self.

• AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE!

There’s no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it–pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic–or the reasons we seek it out–a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management–massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.

Wellness and body care have a long tradition throughout human history. In ancient Greece and Rome, purification rituals and massage were an integral part of life. Seeking balance of mind, body and spirit was a high priority in their teachings. The famous Latin saying mens sana in corpore sano, which means “a healthy mind in a healthy body,” is as true today as it was back in the day of our ancestors.

As humans, we’re hardwired to seek out and enjoy physical touch. Touch, when administered in a safe, caring and loving way, causes our brains to release a calm-inducing hormone/neurotransmitter called oxytocin, also known as the “cuddle” hormone.

Discussion about oxytocin initially focused on its roles in controlling contractions during childbirth, stimulating lactation post-birth and bringing people closer to each other. Further studies show that oxytocin’s relevance to our lives extends beyond bonding and birth. When this hormone is flowing freely, it puts us in a peaceful, happy state of mind; it helps us feel emotionally connected.

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related; and perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be optimistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:

• Decreased anxiety

• Enhanced sleep quality

• Greater energy

• Improved concentration

• Increased circulation

• Reduced fatigue

• Strengthened immune system

• Pain relief

• Deep relaxation

Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance that bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.

Getting a massage can do you a world of good, and getting a massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll be and how youthful you’ll remain, with each passing year.

There are many different massage and bodywork modalities to choose from, such as Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, clinical massage, lymphatic drainage, and gentle hands on techniques like Reiki, Polarity, Zero Balancing, Acupressure or Craniosacral therapy, which allow you to address specific needs and enjoy variety.

Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in health. A reminder: just because massage feels like a pampering treat doesn’t make it any less therapeutic. Consider massage appointments as a necessary component of your health and wellness plan.

NVMT #1002 |

Massage therapy promotes healthy brain function through the applied pressure to the muscles, which stimulate receptors in different areas of the brain. This is accomplished by the production of intracellular messengers (proteins such as neurotransmitters). These messengers are key to a healthy brain and are primarily useful through three main systems of the body. These are the endocrine, nervous and immune systems.

Each of these systems has a tremendous impact on brain activity as well as each other. They form a network of communication that allows the brain to receive the intracellular messengers during a massage session. If one of these systems becomes compromised, it can cause problems with the other two systems, thereby decreasing brain activity.

The healthier the brain, the better results from the massage and other alternative healing modalities, such as aromatherapy. It becomes a symbiotic relationship between the body and the brain; much like strengthening and stretching a muscle through exercise, yoga, walking, etc. Everything we do, or neglect to do, affects our brains. Everything we “perceive” has to do with brain function. A decrease in brain activity affects the body’s ability to function normally.

How healthy is your brain? Can you remember easily, such as why you walked into a particular room? Count backwards in increments of seven? Do you read, learn easily or play games that stimulate your thought processes? What we focus on either sends positive or negative reaction to the brain. If you are constantly watching or listening to the news, watching violence on TV or playing violent video games, you are sending negative responses to the brain, causing harm to the receptors and diminishing brain function.

There are some instances, however, where you won’t want the brain to receive more stimulation. For example, stroke victims wouldn’t want it because it’s too much stimulation to injured neurons. Therefore, if you have any illnesses or injuries, it is always best to consult with your doctor first and be sure to keep your massage therapist informed of any medical issues.

The brain uses 20 percent of the body’s glucose levels. To keep up the glucose levels, it is important to eat something within an hour or two before getting a massage, for maximum results. The amount of pressure of the massage does not affect the body’s ability to send intracellular messengers to the brain, so you can reap the rewards of stimulating your brain’s activity whether you’re getting a light relaxing massage or a deeper, therapeutic one.

Just as we respond positively when we are treated with kindness and respect, our brains respond with a higher level of activity, which promotes healthy brain function. Be kind to yourself and consider making massage therapy an integral part of keeping yourself healthy and wise.

With specific complaints from the client, a therapist can help rid the body of pain and discomfort, increase mobility and flexibility, while activating the lymphatic system; which improves general health and creates more energy, due to increased circulation.

Pain is the body’s signal that something is wrong. Often times, many issues can be prevented with a routine massage program. Stress alone can cause headaches, anxiety, sleep deprivation and compromise the immune system, which makes you more susceptible to colds and flu. The adjacent chart shows several areas of lifestyles, related symptoms and respective remedies. Symptoms can vary from simple nagging aches and pain to burning sensations, shooting pain or heat, throbbing, tingling, numbness and the loss of ability of full range of motion. For example, if one is unable to turn one’s head from side to side.

It is said that knowledge is power, and when that knowledge is put into use, it becomes wisdom. Be wise this Earth month and invest in the single most important thing, your health. Without it, you can do nothing. With it, you can move mountains, maybe even save the planet!

Unaltered essential oils are naturally perfected recipes for strength and survival. Due to the unique complexity of any given complete oil, it is impossible for bacteria to develop a resistance to it, or for anyone to patent it. Given the its complexity, skill and care are needed to extract the genuine, authentic, total array of components of a plant’s essential oil, and the processor (usually a distiller) needs to make a living as well–“fair trade” does not go on sale.

There are just a few companies that exist and deal only with pure and unaltered essential oils (EOs), taking pride in the quality of the product. (This would NOT include MLMs). Some of the most effective EOs are quite expensive, reflecting the percentage of plant material required to produce them. Most are moderately priced. However, one or two drops at a time is a common optimal dose. Less is truly more. So, a 5 ml. bottle, at least 100 drops, will last a long time.

The complete synergy of each batch of EO has been demonstrated to be more effective than any single component. EOs cannot be produced in mass quantities and still retain the complexity that makes them effective. This means they cannot be preserved, standardized or otherwise “enhanced.” A common “enhancement” is to pump up the most aromatic component(s), which can be obtained from less expensive oils. The product 40/42 lavender is very popular, but in fact true lavender contains much less linalool and linalyl acetate–never more than 70 percent combined. This practice is so pervasive that customers sometimes reject the true lavender for the “louder,” less expensive, version. Though the fragrance may be amped up, the healing bouquet is diminished.

The unaltered EO recipe is exact, having been evolving for millennia, and may contain hundreds of components. The best measurements we have currently cannot identify all of them. For example, Frankincense is still about 60 percent unidentified. Yet, its historical use and significance is document, and there is current evidence that it plays a big role in cancer treatments.

However, when we insist on “clinical trials,” we actually trivialize the potential of the EOs. While the chemistry of a particular oil is important, it does not tell the whole story. Biologically, natural is different from synthetic in a few important ways, including the tonic effect, with an overall individualized balancing result. EOs are self-regulating; for example, if there is no need for a particular component, it simply does not fire and will not cause possible side effects.

Currently there is no industrial interest in researching complete EOs. Ultimately, direct experience will be the deciding factor regarding ongoing personal use. Does it work for you?

The mind-body-immunity connection is generally accepted today. There is no better example of strengthening all the inner systems than with pure EO aromatherapy and massage. EOs are also delivered via inhalation, or internal use (as advised by a trained aromatherapist). Your body and spirit consist of uncountable interactions. An essential oil (or blend) works harmoniously to enhance them all. But it must be the real thing.

Our skin is the largest sensory organ in the body, which is one of the reasons we enjoy being touched, and yet massage is not merely skin deep! The art of therapeutic touch, or massage, has been around since ancient civilization. Evidence suggests that prehistoric people massaged their muscles and rubbed herbs, oils, and various substances on their bodies to heal and protect. In many cultures, special healers were said to have the power to heal by touch alone.

Studies show that we hold cellular memory, sometimes called “body memory,” which implies that all sensation is stored in the cells of muscles, bones and connective tissue. The plethora of emotions we experience such as joy, sorrow, daily stress or sudden trauma, can cause problems ranging from annoying discomfort and pain, to becoming potentially debilitating. When our natural state of feeling calm, energetic and capable are upset by too much stress or a sudden crisis, the body responds by going into a state of “flight or fight,” which is appropriate for a small amount of time, but is detrimental if it becomes a normal way of life. Therapeutic massage helps our tissues exchange stress hormones and other waste products for fresh nutrients. This helps to increase the blood and oxygen supply in the circulatory system and increases the flow of the lymphatic system, which in turn allows for more energy, increased ability to stay healthy and gain clarity of mind; which allows both body and mind to return to a more relaxed and balanced state. The benefits have been so inspiring that known authors such as Hippocrates, Homer and Herodotus have written on the subject!

There are many different types of massage therapy, or bodywork. Currently, the most popular in this country are Swedish (relaxing,) deep tissue, sports, hot stone, Reflexology (feet) Acupressure and prenatal. Some others include Thai, Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian) and Tui-Na (Chinese.) Each style offers particular techniques and purpose, based on years of practice and results. There are also several techniques that use the hands without touching the body. This is referred to as energy work and is used for people and animals alike. Reiki, Cranial Sacral, Ortho-Bionomy and Reconnect are the most commonly practiced.

Those seeking to find alternative ways to monitor stress, relax and feel better, are choosing massage, and feel better about themselves for doing so. As always, be sure to check with your doctor if you have any health concerns or think you may be pregnant. You will find that receiving a therapeutic massage is by far one of the most satisfying and relaxing ways to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally and physically. The best part is that all you have to do is show up and your therapist does the rest!

Crash! Boom! Smash! A car accident, no matter how minor the impact, is no small thing. A “minor” whiplash, bump to the knee, sprained ankle, and the emotions (fear, anger, sadness) that go along with the accident, if not treated, can cause chronic pain and have a lasting effect upon the physical and emotional body years down the road.

Any past injury, surgery, or incision in the body, can cause scar tissue to build. The fibrous connective tissue (fascia) of the body is like a tight knitted shirt. It forms and shapes the body and when it is snagged (scar tissue) it will distort and apply strain in many different directions. This distortion can have an affect far from the initial injury.

“TMD is not one disorder, but a group of conditions, often painful, that occur when chewing muscles and jaw joints do not work together correctly,” according to website information.

Headaches, jaw popping, limited motion of the jaw and clenching are all symptom of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction. Recently, a study revealed that 53 percent of sufferers had some level of depression, while 22 percent had insomnia or fatigue due to disrupted sleep patterns.

There may be tight muscles or nerve impindgment within the jaw itself causing the TMJ. The question is are the muscles tight because of what has occured to them or is there a misalignment or other stress in another part of the body, causing the jaw to become sore and inoperable?

During a car accident, numerous injuries may have occured. A major injury during a rear end collision may be whiplash. A whiplash is when a force (the car accident) is transfered into a person causing a rapid flexion and extension of the neck. This rapid movement may cause injury to the vertebra, disks, nerves, brain and soft tissues of the neck. A whiplash can also occur during a slip and fall, resulting in the head hitting the ground. If you have ever had a hard time picking your head up from the pillow the next day after a fall, you may have suffered a whiplash.

Since the body is one unit, the force of the impact does not stop at the neck, but can travel up and down the entire length of the body. This, in turn, can cause chronic pain and TMJ in the future.

A car accident can also trigger the fight or flight response in the nervous system. That is the shaky feeling experienced after getting very excited or scared. If the nervous system is not reset, the person lives in that pattern day to day which can cause stress, excessive energy expenditure, and clenching of the teeth therefore causing TMJ and chronic pain.

Prevention is key to keeping your body healthy, but accidents do happen. When injured, search for a health care provider that will take into account the whole body, in order to find the underlying cause of the chronic pain. Rolfing® and Neural Mobilization may be a path to your health and well-being.

Receiving the gift of a full body massage is fantastic, and is double the benefit when it’s for two! Couple’s massage gives the message that you took a special interest in looking for alternative ways of making your partner feel great and wanting the two of you to connect at a deeper level together. It shows that when a little more thought is put into this annual tradition, some wonderful things can come of it. Studies show that couples that play together, stay together. Massage can make it interesting, while keeping the romance alive.

If you have never had a massage, doing so together can give you a greater sense of safety and comfort. Here’s how it works: you are both in the same room together, with two separate massage tables. You each receive a massage from your own licensed professional massage therapist, so while you may be wanting a deeper, more therapeutic massage, your partner can enjoy whatever type of massage he/she may want, such as a relaxing Swedish, hot stone or aromatherapy. It is perfectly fine to talk a bit during your session or enjoy the experience in silence while listening to calming music.

Although couples massage is generally considered for romantic partners, it also offers a wonderful reprieve for mothers and daughters or girlfriends on an outing. Do keep in mind that you will be dressing and undressing in the same room, so it may not be appropriate for everyone, such as a first date.

Oftentimes, people will receive their first professional massage while on vacation, a cruise or at a resort. This can be very pricey. There are local businesses offering excellent couple’s massage at reasonable rates. This gives you a chance to get acquainted with massage while finding a massage therapist who you feel comfortable with for future sessions, while keeping some green in your pocket.

Staying physically, mentally and emotionally healthy are key to our individual needs that help us live a balanced life. In addition to this is the daily challenge of keeping that balance with our significant other and loved ones. With all of the hustle and bustle, it has become far too easy to let time slip by without so much as a simple gesture of showing how much we care and appreciate those closest to us.

This is the month for love and reminds us to stop the daily grind and turn that simple gesture into something more. Massage for two does just that! In fact, once experienced, most couples tend to continue getting a massage together as part of their monthly routine, recognizing the importance of their “play time” to help them stay connected.

Certified Rolf® Practitioner and Massage Therapist

You may be wondering what that numb, buzzing sensation is in your toes when you put on your favorite “going out” shoes, or ski boots. It can be a compression of nerves in the foot from improperly fitting shoes or possibly an inflamed nerve from a past injury.

That sensation is one of the feelings that a person with peripheral neuropathy has every day, with or without shoes or socks. It is estimated that 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy. In 1999, annual costs to Medicare exceeded 3.5 billion.

Peripheral Neuropathy affects the motor, sensory and autonomic nerves that connect the spinal cord to the rest of the body. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, weakness and pain.

There are many known causes including diabetes, nutritional imbalances, autoimmune disorders and direct impact to the affected nerve. Approximately 30 percent of peripheral neuropathy has an unknown origin. With direct compression, structural misalignment or repetitive stress, impingements of the peripheral nerve may not be known about for many years until symptoms begin showing.

With the loss of sensation, a person must change the way they move and work, in order to compensate for the lack of coordination. If the medial cutaneous nerve of the foot is impinged, it may feel as though you are wearing a sock even with no sock on. Due to the proximity of the medial cutaneous nerve to the surface of the skin, any compression (i.e. sock or shoe) will cause pain. This pain may not be limited to the immediate area but may travel the length of the nerve. In this case this nerve was once part of the sciatic nerve and if the pain is treated at the lower back and pelvis then the root cause of the pain or weakness will not have been addressed.

Because of the loss of sensation in the foot, a person may feel unbalanced or uncoordinated and begin changing their gait to compensate for the lack of sensation. Widening their stance in an effort to maintain balance will bring about other problems through the body, which in turn will cause more pain elsewhere.

If the peripheral neuropathy is caused by a compression of the nerve from repetitive stress, old injury or structural imbalance, then neural mobilization may not only bring about relief but may also help bring the body back into balance. When combining neural mobilization with Rolfing® (to help align and educate the patient) and Pilates (to strengthen the core and learn control and body awareness), success and pain relief comes quickly.

Some patients are told that they will have to live with the pain or that it is all in their head. This is simply not true. It does take a knowledgeable practitioner and work on the patient’s part. Diet, nutrition and proper movement and exercise, along with awareness, is important for any healing process.

Are science and spirituality separate? Are God and Man separate? This is an invitation to observe the innate connection. In Hinduism, the chakras are the seven spiritual energy centers residing in the human spine. In Western medicine, they are our hormonal endocrine glands.

Our spiritual essence is the pure white light of the sun going through this spinal fluid prism, like a rainbow–reflecting all the colors of the light spectrum. From the base of the spine to the top of the head, the colors are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.

In Chemistry the acronym is ROY G BIV.

RED is at the base of the spine; the bowel, representing survival.

ORANGE is at the level of the sexual organs, representing sexuality and creativity.

YELLOW is at the belly button; adrenal glands, representing power–power as in physical strength, and power in how we exert our presence in the world.

GREEN is at the heart. It is the crossover chakra; the transition from lower self to higher self, representing compassion and something very important and powerful. That is ignored in Western religion–recognition we are Deity-God. We are not separate. In the world today, this is the chasm humankind is attempting to crossover and most of us are not aware of it.

BLUE is at the throat; the thyroid gland, representing the energy of speaking our truth.

INDIGO is at the third eye, just above and between our eyes, the pineal gland. It represents the awakened soul, before all of our earthly identities–our clear ineffable presence.

VIOLET is at the crown of the head. It represents our spiritual essence and it is the portal where spirit enters the physical body.

During an elucidating encounter with a holy man, who was discussing the chakras in a small apartment in India in 1988, a question came up: “What was his impression of the West–observing from India?” He replied, “It is quite entertaining to observe the West.” He said, “you live in your lower self; survival, sexuality and power.” He added, “ if you cannot eat it, make love to it or own it, it has very little meaning or purpose to you.” He explained that the West doesn’t put much attention on the higher self.

If you listen to your music, read your newspapers, watch your television, read your mail, and notice your advertising, you will see your attention is mainly on the lower self. There is very little meaning or attention placed upon the spiritual awakening of your higher self.
