This month the Sun enters Leo on July 22. The Sun acts as a focal point for the cosmic energies of this constellation as it influences life on Earth. Leo is a fixed fire sign. The stimulation of the fire element manifests as warmth and heat. The long, hot summer days and nights are the result. From an esoteric standpoint, the alchemical element of sulfur grows in power in nature and the human being. It facilitates the activity of spirit in matter and enlivens the life force.

Fire is heating everything up. In our region, it is the fire season on all levels. If you are a Leo by Sun sign, or have significant planets in Leo in your natal chart, this information is even more directly applicable.

The Sun enters Cancer this month on June 21. This marks Summer Solstice. It is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Cancer is the first water sign of the zodiac and it rules the fluid state of life and light. For those of us here in the Sierras, it is a time that produces maximum snow melt and water runoff. The water element is highly enlivened and energized.

It is important to keep in mind that our bodies are 70 to 80 percent water. Esoterically, water is the physical manifestation of the etheric dimension. This subtle, non-physical dimension is the source of vitality. Water is necessary for life, as we know it to exist. Our etheric body interpenetrates our physical body and feeds it prana, or chi, directly from the life forces emanating from our Sun and the stars. The balanced flow of fluids throughout the body is the physical counterpart of this etheric energy.

The source of thought is the universal cosmic mind. Each of us is a unique individualized expression of the cosmic consciousness. The challenge that we each face is to align our individual thinking with divine thinking and make that the foundation of our lives. This month we shift from the fall to the winter season. Winter Solstice is marked by the Sun entering Capricorn. This rhythmic, energetic shift of nature’s annual cycle celebrates the “rebirth” of the Sun. December 21 is the shortest day and longest night of the year. From now until June 21, Summer Solstice, the Sun will move from the southern to the northern hemisphere. There will be a corresponding lengthening of the day and shortening of the night. This cyclic expansion and contraction of light and darkness is a fundamental theme of life.

The civilizations of the ancient world celebrated these times as symbolic of death and rebirth. Capricorn rules the principle of contraction and the inhale of nature. During the winter season nature turns within and takes a rest. Animals hibernate and plants pull their vitality down into their roots. There is a decrease of activity and vitality. The Sun is at its most southerly point and travels relatively low on the horizon. The angle of the Sun does not result in the heat that we are familiar with in the summer. The result is that the temperature drops and it is cold.

As we near the end of the year, a cycle is coming to an end. We need to look ahead and make plans for the future. The mind and heart need a sense of direction and purpose in order for our lives to be fruitful. We need goals towards which we strive, so that we can accomplish what we desire. The modern debate as to whether there is meaning to life is answered astrologically by the sign of the zodiac Sagittarius. It is the sign that rules wisdom and understanding. Culturally, it expresses as religion, philosophy and metaphysics. A modern synthesis of these principles is what Aldous Huxley named “The Perennial Philosophy.” This body of knowledge constitutes the universal cosmic laws upon which all life is based.

As we move further into the fall season, the days will be getting shorter and the nights longer. Nature is in the process of integrating the celestial influences of the summer and reducing activity to sleep in the winter. From now until spring, darkness will dominate and be at its greatest strength and power. Now the focus is on addressing the shadow elements of life. Libra is the Scales, which is the cosmic principle of balance. The two pans of the scale represent the fundamental reality of polarity, duality, and opposites which must be brought into balance. Libra is the balance or midpoint of the yearly passage of the Sun through the signs of the zodiac. Venus, the planetary rule of Libra, is the principle of love. Of all the signs of the zodiac The Scales rules the cosmic laws of relationship. The fundamental principles of relationship are balance, harmony, and cooperation based on love. The Sun enters Virgo this month on August 22. This is the last month of the summer season. The heat is stimulating. It enlivens and animates the spirit. This should manifest as motivation to improve our lives.
Virgo is The Virgin, which symbolizes purity. Out of all the signs of the zodiac, Virgo is the one that rules health and healing. Now is the time to focus on improving your health. Virgos tend to be more concerned with cleanliness, orderliness and health. When this is taken to a negative extreme, the result is the hypochondriac. The key is balance.
Virgo specifically rules the processes of cleansing and purification. The human body has built in systems to release toxins and pollutants. Systems work better when they are not fouled by the death principle. The life principle is in a constant battle with the death principle, or as physics describes it, the law of entropy.

The Sun enters Cancer this month on June 20. This marks Summer Solstice. It is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Cancer is the first water sign of the zodiac and it rules the fluid state of life and light. For those of us here in the Sierras, it is time for maximum snow melt and water runoff. The water element is highly enlivened and energized.

We also need to remember that our bodies are 70 to 80 percent water. Esoterically, water is the physical manifestation of the etheric dimension. This subtle, non-physical dimension is the source of vitality. Water is necessary for life as we know it to exist. Our etheric body interpenetrates our physical body and feeds it prana, or chi, directly from the life forces emanating from our Sun and the stars. The balanced flow of fluids throughout the body is the physical counterpart of this etheric energy.

On another level Cancer, and its planetary ruler the Moon, rule the principle of soul. We are beings of body, soul and spirit. Soul is the intermediary between spirit and body. The primary principle of soul is love. The language of love is feeling and emotion.
