The latest research into particle physics is proving that everything in our physical world, including the matter that makes up our bodies, is composed of infinitely small particles, vibrating at infinitely high frequencies. The specific frequencies that they vibrate at have everything to do with how our senses interpret that information, and how we (our bodies) interact with it.

Common medical therapies (prescriptions, treatments, etc.) usually lag 20-30 years behind the cutting edge research on the true nature of reality. This includes the theories about how our bodies function and create “health” or “dis-ease.”

The traditional approach to cancer therapy (slash, poison, burn) is increasingly being called into question because of its toxicity, destruction to quality of life, and poor success rates–two percent with a five year survival for full dose chemotherapy patients, according to the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Fortunately, people are becoming less and less willing to accept when the oncologist says “there is nothing else available,” and they are becoming more and more informed about alternatives.

Again, there are many scientifically-based therapies available that are far less toxic and more effective, especially when combined intelligently with certain conventional treatments. The term “Integrative Oncology” means integrating or combining the best of conventional and alternative medicine to provide better outcomes. Unfortunately, the term has also been adopted by some big cancer treatment institutions to mean chemo, radiation and surgery combined with massage, meditation and yoga. This is a joke, and a gross misuse of the term, as well as very misleading to the patients.

Integrative Oncology means combining conventional and alternative “medical” therapies. Anything less is untrue.

Also, very misleading to the public is the total devotion to information published in supposed “peer-reviewed” medical journals.

“Peer-reviewed research published in medical journals gets the golden star of approval from medicine and in the media, yet many, if not most of the findings are incredibly misleading”, this, a quote from Dr. Marcia Angell, former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine. In her book, The Truth about Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It, she exposed many examples of why medical studies often cannot be trusted and said flat out, “Trials can be rigged in a dozen ways, and it happens all the time.”

There are some journals that are not supported by advertising money from drug companies. One such journal is “Alternative Medicine Review.” In an article published way back in 1999, a review was made of a number of valid studies that found the use of a number of different vitamins, trace elements, anti-oxidants and fatty acids, in combination with chemotherapy and irradiation, “prolonged the survival time of patients compared to the expected outcome without the composite oral therapy.”

Still today, cancer patients are routinely told by their oncologists, “stop taking all your supplements before starting therapy.”

For some people, conventional therapy is the right way to go. I always tell my patients, “Follow the path with heart and the one you believe in, that will give you a much greater chance of a positive outcome.” People need to realize that they do have choices. What if there was a therapy that offered the same regenerative, healing effects of stem cells, without the moral dilemma of using human fetuses or frozen embryos.

Amazingly, there is just such a treatment option available. It was pioneered by a Swiss physician, Dr. Paul Niehans, over 90 years ago, using pre-term animal tissues. He discovered that not only are these “cross species” tissues effective, but the pre-term tissue does not trigger an allergic reaction in humans.

If you have ever heard of the “rich and famous” going to Europe for “rejuvenation” treatments, this is it! People such as Dwight Eisenhower, Pope Pius XII, Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso and Joseph Kennedy are among those who took advantage of this therapy.

Unfortunately, there is little known about it in this country because the vast majority of the 330 books, monographs and articles published on it since 1983 have been in languages other than English. There tends to be a very arrogant attitude in the field of medicine in this country, looking down on any research not published in this country.

Conditions such as liver failure, kidney failure, congestive heart failure, and severe degenerative nervous system diseases, have all been helped by this therapy. There are even cases of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus that have been “cured” by this treatment in Germany.

Studies in Europe show that radioactively tagged pancreas cells from prenatal sheep for example, injected intramuscularly, concentrated in the pancreas within 72 hours. The cells themselves just seem to know where to go.

In Germany, Franz Schmid edited an English language version of Cell Therapy in 1983, a 450 page volume that updated the extensive literature and research into the use of embryonic and/or fetal or placental cell suspensions in isotonic salt solutions. Aside from presenting some truly amazing cases of reversals of Down’s syndrome in children, this book described 117 conditions and diseases in which cellular therapy had been found useful, and detailed the combinations of cellular suspensions used.

It was not until 1986 that a California institute published, The Biochemistry of Live Cell Therapy, the first publication in English, which attempted to explain some of the actual scientific mechanics of this overlooked form of treatment.

Of the hundreds of thousands of injections given in Europe during the nine decades of live cell therapy history, it is notable that so few fatalities or significant side effects had been noted. Dr. Kuhnau, who used this therapy for nearly 40 years, always insisted that no significant side effects, let alone fatalities, had ever been reported.

Despite having found favor with some of the major figures of the 20th century, and being found to be legitimate and legal, it is still considered “dubious or experimental” by the monopoly-oriented US media and medical establishment. However, people can investigate and avail themselves of this valuable therapy option.

Metformin is an oral drug that came into use in 1994. At that time, there was no mention of its use as a tool to fight cancer. More recently, it was discovered that this drug may effectively combat cancers of the colon, uterus, and prostate. In an amazing study, a group of Swiss researchers found a 56 percent reduction in breast cancer risk in a group of diabetic women who took metformin for more than five years.

Despite most people’s aversion to taking prescription drugs, serious consideration should be given to taking this generic, inexpensive medication that was originally derived from the French lilac. This compound has a long history in botanical medicine. It was “rediscovered” and approved by the FDA as a treatment for type II diabetes in 1994. It quickly became the most widely prescribed drug for that disease.

Beginning around 2002, a series of epidemiological studies revealed a remarkable trend: diabetic patients taking metformin were less likely to die compared to diabetics using other forms of therapy.

By 2005, evidence from large, population-based studies clearly showed that people taking metformin for diabetes were significantly and reliably protected against the increased cancer risk posed by the diabetes itself.

It is a known fact that diabetics are predisposed to a broad range of cancers in the liver, pancreas, colon, breast, uterus, kidney and prostate. Scientists theorized that if ways to reduce chronic blood sugar elevations, and other molecular consequences associated with weight gain were discovered, this would have a powerful impact on interrupting some of the pathways that lead to cancer. It turned out that metformin acts in a multi-targeted fashion, to accomplish precisely those effects.

It has long been recognized that a calorie restriction diet is one of the only “proven” methods of slowing down the aging process and preventing a whole host of chronic diseases, everything from heart disease to cancer, but try getting people to stick to its severe restrictions.

Interestingly, metformin essentially “fools” the body into believing that it is in a calorie restricted state, thereby switching on the same protective mechanisms that arise from calorie restriction itself.

That is not to imply that metformin is a totally benign medication. It is also essential that it only be used under the supervision of a qualified physician.

There is a growing body of evidence showing that metformin acts through multiple pathways to trigger profound cellular changes in every mammalian tissue, activating tumor suppressing mechanisms. This has now been demonstrated to benefit not only those with diabetes but also apparently healthy people.

Due to the multiple ways it works, there is no reason to think that these results won’t, in fact, be generalizable to every human malignancy!

Oxidation is a chemical reaction that involves oxygen. It ranges in scope from rust formation on an iron tool, to a campfire, to the destruction or stimulation of different cells in our body. Without it, life as we know it would be impossible.

Bio Oxidative therapy is the use of oxygen, in several different ways, to improve health, or restore it after it is lost to disease.

These therapies range from something as simple as aerobic exercise to things as complex as intravenous hydrogen peroxide and ozone, to hyperbaric treatments.

The body uses oxygen to produce hydrogen peroxide in different amounts, for many purposes. Both of these compounds are helpful in regulating things as diverse as cell membranes and hormone production, to blood sugar levels and cell energy production.

The therapeutic use of intravenous hydrogen peroxide was pioneered in this country by Dr. Charles Farr in Oklahoma. In 1993, he was nominated for a Nobel Prize for his research in its use. He was the founder and first president of the International Bio-Oxidative Medicine Foundation; which currently publishes a protocol for the safe and proper administration of intravenous peroxide. Many doctors believe the use of this therapy is unsafe, but they are uninformed about the 50-100 new scientific articles that are published each month, at many major medical research centers, throughout the world.

Ozone therapy is another way to use oxygen for therapeutic purposes. Ozone gas is a form of oxygen that contains three molecules (O3), as compared to the normal oxygen (O2) that we breathe. It is deadly to all viruses, many bacteria, and most of all cancer cells. The most common (and safest) method of doing this involves the removal of a sample of blood, which is anticoagulated, mixed with ozone gas in a sterile bottle, and then given back to the patient intravenously.

There are many different theories about how and where oxygen and hydrogen peroxide are utilized in the body. Both have been found to be important in regulating the immune system, and are used to kill harmful organisms. They are also important in the regulation of everything from proper blood sugar, to the production of certain hormones and compounds necessary for brain and nervous system function.

Bio Oxidative therapy is reported to be beneficial for treating a broad range of ailments including various types of infections, emphysema, coronary artery disease, post-stroke syndrome, gangrene, spider bites, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.

This relatively inexpensive, non-toxic and safe therapy is used much more frequently in Europe, but is slowly becoming more accepted in the United States. Because of the cost and toxicity of many modern pharmaceuticals, it is being looked at more closely by physicians and patients alike.

Dr. Eslinger’s primary treatment approach has six components, including boosting immune function, using Bio-Oxidative therapies, intravenous vitamin C, Laetrile, Insulin Potentiation Therapy, and the MEAD analysis device for balancing the body’s Acupoint Meridians. As an Integrative Physician treating cancer “outside the system,” or as we say “outside the box,” I feel that I have six major challenges facing me with every patient.

The first is getting people to realize that there are possibilities for treating their disease other than what they have been offered by their conventional oncologist. Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are presented as being the only options available to their patients.  There are many other options but the patient must have the courage to say “there must be a better way” and must be willing to do some research in order to get more informed.  The internet can be a great help in this regard, but the person must take the initiative to start. Most conventional oncologists will do their best to discourage people from even beginning this search.

The second challenge is having people arrive at our clinic in a very advanced stage of their disease, or after having their immune systems almost completely destroyed by the widely accepted therapies using chemo and radiation.

The third is having a patient really excited about pursuing Integrative therapies, but encountering interference from well meaning family or friends. They also come to our clinic with many preconceived ideas that interfere with their healing.

The fourth, having to work at reversing what we refer to as the “fear factor.” Many times, fear is even used as a tool to get a patient to go into conventional treatment. The problem is that fear triggers the sympathetic nervous system, commonly known as the “fight, flight or fright reaction,” and automatically suppresses the immune system. It requires an attitude of “reversing victimhood” and helping the patient take charge of their healing.

The fifth is finding a way to help the patient stop their self sabotage and begin being a participant in their healing. It needs to become an active, not a passive, process or any gains made will only be temporary at best.

The last big hurdle for many people is the cost of therapy. Since most of Integrative medical therapies are not covered by insurance, people must have the means to pay for the treatments. Many people find a way to do this once they realize how important it is to their long term health to not just accept the “party line” of chemo, radiation and surgery.

If these challenges can be overcome, the patient can then begin the process of true healing.

Of all the pains in the world kidney stone pain is some of the worst. Of course, textbooks have been written about this problem, and I hope you can avoid them. However, if you have to visit the unfortunate realm of kidney stones there are some helpful pointers which may be of advantage to you.

A recent article in HB made excellent suggestions regarding diet to avoid kidney stones, especially avoiding milk, rhubarb, raw spinach, aspirin and perhaps vitamin C, if they are recurrent. Most stones are made of calcium oxalate, and are very ugly. They resemble the most gruesome fishing hooks, with devilish barbs and cutting surfaces. Of course, if you suddenly develop back pain radiating into your flank and moving into your groin with blood in your urine and accompanying waves of nausea, you can confirm the diagnosis of kidney stones with an IVP (intravenous pylorogram); an x ray with dye, which lights up the kidneys, collecting ducts around the kidneys and the ureters (tubes leading into the bladder) and bladder.

Usual treatments can start with conventional diuretics, water pills, which increase urine flow and lead into lithotripsy; a sound/shock wave treatment administered through the skin to break up the kidney stones, and can move into a surgical treatment, administered by a urologist, to send up a stone basket to retrieve it through the urinary tract. Lithotripsy is not always a walk in the park. A good friend and patient had stones a dozen years ago, and following lithotripsy his renal (kidney) artery was ruptured and he nearly bled to death. He was hospitalized for six weeks afterwards until he recovered. 

There are numerous claims for stone solvent herbs, like Royal flush, and Bucco from Nestmann, which prevent inflammation in the urinary tract. Folk remedies, which have been helpful for us over the years, include drinking a six-pack of Classic Coke in one hour. The phosphoric acid in the Coke helps to dissolve the calcium oxalate stones; this is the only time we recommend Coke. This is to be followed with ½ cup of asparagus juice, which is an herbal diuretic, to flush the stones out. B₆ 250 mg per day is also a nutrient diuretic. Epsom salts, or magnesium sulfate, is a ureteral dilator and helps open up the pathway for the stones to exit the urinary tract. Try ½ tsp. of Epsom salts in water every hour or so, until diarrhea occurs and then back down the dose. Sometimes, bouncing on an exercise trampoline is helpful.

My absolute favorite treatment for stoness utilizes Neural Therapy from Germany. Neural therapy uses procaine, local anesthetic, injected into the skin over acupuncture points. I generally add the Homeopathic combination of Spascupreel from Heel, Germany to the procaine and inject into the back of the head Bladder 10 points and the mid back Shu Points, Bladder 23 and behind the knee in bladder 10 and kidney 40. Of course, acupuncture needling into these points has been done for millennia. I find that procaine with homeopathy works faster in achieving results.

Last year, a 63 year old female equestrian was having severe kidney stone pain and after the first injection into the above points, her nausea stopped completely and her pain reduced 80 percent. On repeating the injections, two days later she passed her stones and was a very happy camper. I have done this with a score of patients over the past 10 years.

Always check your parathyroid hormone level if you have recurrent stones. If it is high, it can cause calcium to plate out in your kidneys and you may need to have your parathyroids removed at a specialty clinic in Florida. 

As a physician treating cancer with integrative/alternative medicine, one of my greatest challenges and biggest frustrations, is having the patient present to me after they are already sick. That is the paradigm in medicine in this country, and has been for many years: wait until you are sick and then go to the doctor for the “cure!” Immune boosting is one way to help prevent getting sick in the first place.

Technically called “Immune Enhancement Therapy,” this approach consists of the use of particular IV and oral substances, as well as mental/psychological techniques, with the goal of strengthening and balancing the immune system.

Just as there are many different substances that can suppress the immune system, there are as many that can build, strengthen and balance it.

Intravenous vitamin C, in the dosage range of 15-50 grams (that’s 15-50,000mg), is widely recognized as being viricidal (deadly to viruses) in and of itself, but also very strengthening to the immune system. One of the mechanisms is by increasing the ability of certain white blood cells to produce internal peroxide. This gives them a greater bacterial and viral fighting tool, because peroxide is deadly to them.

Heavy metals (lead, mercury, aluminum, etc.) are known to inhibit the immune system. It stands to reason then, that removing these substances from the body will help build the strength of the immune system. This is accomplished through oral or intravenous chelation therapy, using a compound called calcium EDTA. Interestingly, this therapy has been recognized by the AMA for treatment of heavy metal toxicity, since the 1920’s!

Oxidative therapies are another category of treatments that can be applied to help improve the function of the immune system. The use of ozone and hydrogen peroxide increase the oxidative stress on the cells of the body.  Normal cells have metabolic mechanisms to deal with and neutralize this stress. However, cancer cells, and many microorganisms that prey on the immune system, cannot handle the stress and therefore succumb to it.

UBI (ultraviolet blood irradiation) is a new/old treatment that was started in the US in the 1920’s. Its focus shifted to Eastern Europe in the 1960’s as pharmaceuticals became more popular for treatment in the United States.  Amazingly, the EPA has issued a policy statement “recognizing the therapeutic benefit of UBI in treating viral diseases and some forms of cancer.” It has been demonstrated to be superior to drugs in treating chronic viral infections. Also, a number of studies have demonstrated that UBI is very stimulating to the immune system in general.

These therapies obviously must be done in a clinic setting under the supervision of a trained and experienced physician. Some things that can be done at home are taking extra Vitamin A and D3 and/or the herbs Echinacea, sweet violet, cleavers, red clover and burdock. They are all known to be of great benefit to the immune system.

The next thing a person must realize is that they must practice some form of relaxation steps on a regular basis to turn down their stress level. Over activity of the sympathetic (adrenal overdrive) nervous system is widely known to suppress the immune system. Stimulation of the “relaxation response,” by whatever means, enhances the immune system.

These are general steps that can be utilized in “Immune Enhancement Protocol” to help a healthy person stay that way. Each individual would require a unique program based on their age, state of health and medical history.

In these days of economic considerations it is also much more cost effective to keep oneself healthy than to wait for disease to develop.

As organs go, the gallbladder isn’t the sexiest of organs. However, when the gallbladder and liver malfunction, a host of painful and unpleasant symptoms appear, which leads to the surgical removal of roughly 500,000 of them annually. GB disease symptoms include pain under the right rib cage; which can radiate to the back and the top of the right shoulder, fatty food intolerance, nausea, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea and many bowel symptoms. No doubt some deserve to go, especially when the gallbladder (GB) is chronically infected with a thickened, dystonic (non-moving) wall and packed with stones. The prospect of GB perforation into the peritoneum is certainly dire. However, in my experience, for most GB’s with acute or episodic pain following fatty meals and mild or moderate disease, a rescue should be attempted.

Over 25 million Americans have gallstones, with one million new cases diagnosed annually, according to the American Gastroenterology Association. Surgery is often not a walk in the park; with 40 percent of post gallbladder surgery patients still having symptoms of nausea, pain, gas, bloating, IBS, dumping syndrome, scarring and food intolerance. Gall stones also pack most of the biliary ducts in the liver, and go unrecognized in ultrasound and CT scans. When they are found, the diagnosis of a fatty liver is given; however, the bile obstruction is still present; which leads to malabsorption of fats and oils, as well as calcium and causing manifold digestive disturbances. In his compelling book, The Amazing Liver & Gallbladder Flush, Andreas Moritz, links these toxic livers and GB’s to over 67 different medical conditions, affecting every organ system in the body.

Many health modalities have good things for the liver and GB. Herbs, antioxidant nutrients, anti- inflammatory nutrients, bile salts, pancreatic enzymes, organic diet avoiding trans fats, acupuncture, neural therapy, energy medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, liver/GB flush, coffee enemas, chiropractic, topical poultices and castor oil packs, mood and stress modulation (Chinese medicine reminds us the emotion of an unhappy liver/ GB is anger), and many other approaches can be employed in the rescue.

In 37 years of medical practice, I have only lost four or five GB’s to surgery. It was usually because the patient did not tell me they were having GB issues; or, a relative, nurse or doctor assured them that if they didn’t have it out, they would die.

I am reminded of a 43 year old, prominent, Reno man who had a GB attack during dinner, at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco; and was laid out on the table with doctor relatives obviously concerned and pushing him to go to the hospital for surgery. For some reason, his pain lightened up a little and he called me. I recommended massage for his paraspinal muscles in the thoracic area, which immediately improved his pain. He was able to get home to Reno and apply a castor oil pack over his liver, which was very soothing and pain relieving.

Castor oil packs were popularized by Edgar Cayce, the sleeping prophet from Virginia Beach, Virginia in the 1920’s, a medical intuitive and psychic who made many accurate predictions for the future. His work is still promulgated by the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in Virginia Beach and other centers.

Unrefined castor oil, also called the Palma Christi, contains resin from the castor bean, a counter irritant with marvelous lymphatic stimulating and pain relieving properties. The pack is made by pouring the castor oil on a diaper type flannel, heavier flannel or on an old wash cloth or piece of towel, and applying it to the skin over any painful area; which is then covered with a baggy or store plastic bag, and then covered with a hot water bottle or hot pad for 30 to 60 minutes. Of course, the GB is just below the right rib cage and the liver is above the right rib margin and extends across the midline above the left rib margin. Remember not to sleep with the hot pad, for fear of burns. Castor oil packs can be used on any place or joint on the body and are especially soothing for inflamed areas.  They can be made into a Russian poultice around joints by wrapping them with an ACE bandage.

During our initial appointment, I employed Neural Therapy, among others. He returned the next day with 50 percent of his pain resolved, even after playing golf; although, he didn’t use his driver. I repeated the Neural Therapy during our second appointment as well. He wasn’t very hungry and found the castor oil packs still extremely soothing. One week later, most of his pain subsided; he experienced an occasional twinge if he rolled in bed the wrong way. He was also eating more liberally. Another week later, he was 100 percent symptom free, and still is, nine years later. He loves to embarrass me when we see him at local restaurants, loudly proclaiming “There’s Dr. Gerber. He saved my gallbladder years ago.”

Dendritic Cell therapy represents a new and promising immunotherapeutic approach for treatment of advanced cancer, as well as for secondary prevention of cancer. The immune system is an astoundingly complex and wonderful system, perhaps second only to the brain in complexity and mystery. It has many different pathways, mechanisms, and feedback loops that enable it to recognize and destroy highly evolved invaders like bacteria, viruses and parasites; and sometimes, tumor cells, without destroying the normal healthy cells which make up your body.

The immune system attacks things it recognizes as foreign. This recognition involves binding to very specific molecular sequences called “antigens.” These compounds on the surface of the foreign (tumor) cells stimulate what are called cytotoxic T-cells, which bind to the cells and send them a signal telling them to self-destruct.

Once cytotoxic T-cells are activated, they will not only kill cells displaying the antigen they recognize, but they will also multiply. Cytotoxic T-Cells are activated by encounters with special immune cells called “Antigen Presenting Cells.” Dendritic cells are a type of antigen presenting cell created in a high temperature incubator in the presence of tumor cells, along with a specific kind of bacteria.

Scientists at Duke University discovered how dendritic cells can be used as vaccines by mixing them with genetic material (tumor cells), incubating them, and then infusing them back into the patient. The dendritic cells present the tumor antigens to the body’s white blood cells (T-lymphocytes) for destruction.

According to Dr. Harmon Eyre, Vice President of Research at the American Medical Association, “Patients’ responses [to dendritic cell vaccines] are far out of proportion to anything that any current therapy could do.”

When BCG vaccine, a type of bacterial vaccine made from the mycobacteria family, is combined, and incubated, with the dendritic cell vaccine, it stimulates the lymphoreticuloendothelial system and results in stimulating increased resistance to, and attack on cancer cells. BCG has been shown to be a potent activator of NK (T-lymphocyte) cells. The mechanism of action by BCG is considered to be primarily that of stimulating and mobilizing of certain cells called macrophage cells. It stimulates them to produce interferon (a very potent imunostimulator), which in turn stimulates cancer killing NK cells. The vaccine is injected into and under the skin once per week for 3 weeks and then monthly as a booster until the cancer is gone.

Vaccine therapy offers promising new hope in the fight against this old scourge of humankind.

Last month’s column was devoted to diabetes prevention. Weight loss, exercise, avoidance of fast foods and non-organic foods with many toxic concentrates such as POPs (persistent organic pollutants), PCB’s, heavy metals and solvents, statistically reduces your chances of having adult onset diabetes. However, if you are already diabetic, it is important to know about a broad array of nutritional supplements and herbs, many of which have been used for millennia, to improve blood sugar. Many of these herbs also reduce cholesterol and improve HDL/LDL ratios and reduce triglycerides.

Berberis herb found in Barbary bark, 500 mg three times per day, works as well as metformin (Glucophage) in lowering blood sugar with no side effects (diarrhea). Bitter melon, Mormordica charantia, also known as balsam pear, is a tropical vegetable widely cultivated in Asia, Africa and South America for treating diabetes and has been clearly established in both experimental and clinical studies. It is more potent than tolbutamide as a blood sugar lowering agent. It can potentiate the effects of other blood sugar lowering drugs and may lead to low blood sugar.

Cinnamon has very positive clinical outcomes for lowering blood sugar from 18 to 29 percent, with doses from one to six grams (thousand milligrams) per day in a Pakistani study.  Cinnamon has been touted to triple insulin’s efficiency. Go online for a comprehensive review of Cinnamon; there are several subspecies, with varying claims. Stevia, the organic sweetener from South America, has beneficial effects on glucose tolerance and its use as a sweetener can reduce the use of sugar. Pterocarpus marsupium, Indian Kino, looks like dried blood (Dragon’s blood), long used in Indian medicine as a remedy for diabetes and has been shown to regenerate functional pancreatic beta cells. Another classic herb from India is Gymnema sylvestre, at 500 mg per day.

Nutritional supplements have many supportive functions for sugar metabolism. Chromium, up to 6,000 mcg per day for 30 days and then reduced to 2,000 mcg maintenance, has been employed by Jonathan Wright, MD for weakened adrenals and diabetes. He has a high dose supplement (1,000 mcg. per drop) available from his Tahoma, Washington Clinic Pharmacy and recommends that it be taken in water to avoid staining the teeth purple, especially in the elderly.

Vitamin B12- injections have been shown to improve diabetic retinopathy. Magnesium levels tend to be low in diabetics; and supplementing improves various measures of glycemic control and neuropathy, burning, painful extremities which can lead to gangrene. Magnesium can also prevent cardiovascular complications (heart attack, stokes, gangrene) of diabetes and should be included in a supportive nutritional program for diabetes.

Vitamin D plays a role in insulin secretion; low serum levels are associated with an increased risk of diabetes. In a double-blind study of women, with insulin resistance and low vitamin D levels, administration of 4,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 for six months improved insulin resistance compared with placebo. Many other nutrients have well documented, mostly positive effects, on diabetes especially vitamin C, which can become deficient in diabetes and lead to capillary fragility, small vessel disease and slow the progression of diabetic retinopathy (blindness) and nephropathy (kidney failure). All the B vitamins, E complex, Vitamin K, Acetyl l Carnitine, Vitamin A and pancreatic enzymes all have positive studies supporting their use in diabetes care.

Recently, there has been renewed controversy surrounding the use of high dose intravenous vitamin C in the treatment of cancer.

In the late 1970’s, Dr. Ewan Cameron and Dr. Linus Pauling published numerous papers, and a book, Cancer and Vitamin C, on the response of cancer patients who received large doses of  supplemental vitamin C. They concluded that supplemental vitamin C is of benefit to most cancer patients. The benefit ranged from an increased sense of well-being to a prolongation of survival time in terminal patients, to rare complete remissions.

Then, in 1979 and 1985, Drs. Edward Creagan and Charles Moertel, of the Mayo Clinic, published studies showing no benefit from supplemental vitamin C on survival times.

It must be pointed out however, that the Mayo studies were carried out on patients that had undergone extensive chemotherapy and the dose was a very low 10 grams, given orally. The Scottish studies used much higher doses of 50-75 grams given IV as an adjunct to conventional treatment.

In the early 1990’s, Dr. Pauling published two papers with Dr. Abram Hoffer, who developed a regimen for use in cancer patients that includes B vitamins, vitamin E, large doses of vitamin C, beta carotene, selenium, zinc and other substances. The statistical analysis of their data revealed that about 40 percent of the cancer patients survived five years or more after the initiation of the regimen.

Dr. Kedar Prasad of the University of Colorado, and his colleagues, advocate the use of a very similar combination of B vitamins, large doses of vitamin C and E and beta-carotene for cancer patients undergoing either chemotherapy or radiation. In a recent article published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Dr. Prasad presented results from cell culture experiments demonstrating that the killing effect of many cancer drugs or radiation, on mouse and human cancer cells, is enhanced in the presence of vitamins C or E.

In another extensive article published in Alternative Medicine Review in 1999, Drs. Lamson and Brignall noted that “considerable data exists, showing increased effectiveness of many cancer therapeutic agents, as well as a decrease in adverse effects, when given concurrently with antioxidants.”

A more recent study at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, showed that two hours of exposure to vitamin C, significantly cut the survival of ovarian, pancreatic and brain cancer cells. Similar results were seen when cancer-ridden mice were injected with vitamin C. The therapy halved the growth of aggressive tumors, killing cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue unharmed.

The final word on vitamin C is not in yet. However, it seems to work very well in conjunction with a number of other therapies in providing better outcomes in the treatment of cancer. This is all the more remarkable for a substance that has yet to be shown to have a toxic dosage level.

Forty to fifty million Americans suffer from allergies to pollen, pets, sagebrush, foods, plants, drugs, etc. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that over 20 percent of the world population experience allergic conditions, with symptoms of a running nose, burning and watery eyes, congestion and asthma. Food allergies among children have increased 18 percent from 1997 to 2007. Milk, eggs and nuts are among the top food allergies. Allergies cost the health care system over $18 billion annually. It is estimated to be the sixth leading cause of chronic diseases in the United States.

Allergies are noted as an over-reaction or hypersensitivity of the immune system to certain substances. These substances, called allergens, would normally be harmless to the body. In the case of a hypersensitivity reaction, an abnormal and vigorous immune response takes place in order to fight off the allergen, as if it were a bacteria, virus or foreign object. A person can develop this hypersensitivity at any age and to just about any substance. Some people develop an allergic reaction to something they have worked with or have been around for years.

Studies demonstrated that prolonged exposure to stressful events can adversely affect the central nervous, circulatory and endocrine systems. When the nervous system is chronically stressed, the neuro-endocrine system can become fatigued and function abnormally. The brain will secrete hormones that trigger a variety of body reactions such as swelling, congestion, coughing, and a change in heart rate and digestion. Johns Hopkins School of Medicine found that “hay fever and asthma seem to begin from events not only in the respiratory system, but also from the nervous system which is overreacting to stimuli.”

One approach to dealing with allergy problems is to avoid or restrict contact with any allergenic substance. Other treatments include medical injections, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. While temporary relief may derive from these medications, they can have adverse effects on the body as well. Some people find relief through other alternative treatments such as chiropractic care, homeopathic remedies and acupuncture.

The newest and most effective allergy treatments combine laser and biofeedback technology to help rid the body of allergens without drugs, vitamins or needles.
