A Thanksgiving Staycation

By Sara Piccola
Thanksgiving is a time for family, feasting, and a much needed vacation. Many will travel hundreds of miles to meet with family and relatives to share the experience of home and hearth. However, for some the idea of a Thanksgiving holiday doesn’t mean cooking a huge meal and having to entertain on our days off.
This month we’re recommending a Thanksgiving getaway to the mountains, where family, feasting, and vacation are all incorporated. The whole point of a “staycation” is getting a vacation without going far from home. Pack up the family to enjoy some good food, good times, and get a jumpstart on the ski season!
The Village at Squaw Valley
Squaw Valley Ski Resort is expected to open November 22, weather permitting, of course. Get in some early season ski runs during the day and then feast on a delicious Thanksgiving meal while overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe from High Camp, the top of a 2,000 vertical foot cable ride.
For some exercise, walk around The Village and visit the 19 unique shops. Indulge in a spa treatment from Trilogy Spa or create your own candles at Waxen Moon. There’s plenty of entertainment to help you relax and enjoy the holiday season, mountain style.
Northstar Village and Resort
The Village at Northstar is one of the finest mountain villages in North America. From luxurious condominiums to shopping boutiques, cafes, restaurants and much more; there’s something for everyone.
Join the village for live music, special events, holiday festivities, shopping and even beading. During Thanksgiving week you can relax with Tai Chi, Yoga, and Acupuncture from Balance Holistic Health Center. A Thanksgiving meal can be enjoyed at any of the surrounding restaurants and of course the mountain will be open, showcasing the first ski runs of the year.
Heavenly Ski Resort
Is it heaven or is it earth? Head a different direction to Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The Gondola to the top of Heavenly re-opens in November, the ride offers breath taking views for the whole family.  Once at the top, enjoy sledding, a zip line, and other family activities. With the number one snow making technology in the United States, Heavenly Resort should have no problem reaching their tentative opening date of November 23rd, just in time for the holidays.
Once you’ve built up an appetite on the slopes there are several restaurants recommended for a satisfying Thanksgiving meal. Try the Chart House, a steak and seafood restaurant located on Kingsbury Grade overlooking the lake. You could also head into town to Riva Grill. Riva is located on the water; it doesn’t get more beautiful than that. Head out to the Beacon Bar & Grill for another lakeside meal or to any of the casinos for a Thanksgiving buffet.
If you just can’t imagine Thanksgiving without cooking a turkey dinner for your loved ones then check out the Marriot in South Lake Tahoe. Suites come with a full kitchen and are located next door to Raley’s Supermarket, talk about convenience! Bon Appetite.
Even though we only have a few days off to celebrate, Thanksgiving brings to mind delicious smells, family snuggles and hugs, board games, laughter and being with those we love. So, gather up the family and head to Tahoe to enjoy Thanksgiving in the mountains and kick off the ski season! Eat, give thanks, and enjoy!
